In our last post we asked what you thought Ethan and Alex might have found in their test pit? Turns out it was a cruik, the hook and chain that would hold pots above the hearth. There’s a fine example at the folk museum in Newtonmore. They didn’t find a brownie swinging on the hook, but maybe that’s what caused it to fall down in the first place! https://www.nms.ac.uk/discover-catalogue/scots-words-and-superstitions-in-household-objects

We’ve been digging some test pits on our investigating a post medieval settlement near Amulree just off General Wade’s Crieff to Dalnacardoch military road. After the initial heavy work of deturfing and mattocking, the more delicate trowel work reveals different features and deposits to be meticulously measured and drawn, including some interesting objects! What do you think the Ethan and Alex have found in their test pit? 🤠

We’ve had a little break from our socials over the last couple of months, just spending time with family, doing little trips and working on our gardens, gearing up for the busy summer season ahead! But we’re back now and looking forward to welcoming participants to our various field schools and tours of the Scottish Borders! If you’ve booked on to one, we’ll see you soon! If you’re still looking for a new adventure, we have some spots still available on our tours in the autumn! Hope you’re out enjoying the sunshine!
