The amount of coaching based on absolute nonsense is staggering.

We’ve seen it all:

- Personality tests that have been debunked for decades.
- “Certifications” are being handed out like confetti.

- Coaches who read The Secret once and decided they were qualified to teach manifestation as a business tool.

One recent study showed 50% of coaches use pseudoscientific ideas in their sessions.

That’s terrifying. Because it means thousands of clients are paying thousands of pounds to get advice that’s about as scientifically solid as a horoscope.

And look, if crystals and chakras are your thing, fine. But don’t pretend it’s strategy.

Don’t build someone’s future on vibes.

Every new coach secretly thinks they’re a fraud.

You won’t say it out loud, but you’ll feel it in your chest when you sign your first client.
That little whisper: “Who the hell am I to be coaching anyone?”

And then comes the niche crisis.

Do you go all-in on exec coaching?
Life coaching? Leadership? Career transitions?
Or do you throw “I help people unlock their potential” on your LinkedIn header like everyone else and hope nobody notices you don’t have a clue?

You know what though? Every coach starts with imposter syndrome, every coach starts with uncertainty, and every coach at the beginning is trying to “pick a niche” like it’s choosing the Hogwarts house that’ll define the rest of their career.

It won’t.

You don’t need to pick the perfect niche on day one.
You need to start coaching, and working with messy, real humans.

The niche reveals itself through action, not planning.

So if you feel like an imposter right now?

Good.

That means you’re stepping into something bigger than you. And that’s how you grow, right?

The trick is to stop waiting until you feel ready to coach.

Running a business is different from working in one.

Loads of coaches come from corporate backgrounds.

They’ve been directors, senior managers, team leaders. Smart, experienced, capable people who’ve handled budgets, people, pressure.

And then they leave. They want freedom. Flexibility. A business of their own.

They take a coaching course. Set up a website. And then…panic.

Suddenly, they’ve got to wear multiple hats. Sales. Branding. Marketing. Content. Pricing. Operations. Admin. And coach on top of it.

There’s no IT team. No HR. No finance department. No brand recognition.

Just them. A laptop. And a creeping sense of “WTF have I done?”

Hourly rates for coaching belong in the bin.

Charging by the hour might make sense if you’re a plumber.

But if you’re a coach, someone solving problems that impact the entire direction of a business, you’re worth more than your clock.

Hourly pricing reduces your value to time spent. Not outcomes created.

Here’s what happens:

You become chained to the calendar. Clients treat you like a temp. You start resenting your work because you’re maxed out with zero growth.

The best coaches don’t sell hours. They sell impact.

And when you’ve built the skills, experience, and reputation to back it up, you can charge based on what changes for the client. Not how long it took.

At Tricres, we train coaches to escape the hourly-rate hamster wheel. But we’re also blunt about this:

You can only charge for value if you actually deliver it.

So if you’re still fluffing through sessions asking vague open-ended questions just to pad time…stick with the hourly model.

Coaching Isn’t a “Calling”.

Far too many people mistake coaching for a vibe.
They say they’ve been “called to coach.” That they “hold space” and “guide others into transformation.” But when it comes to real results?
Nada.

Coaching isn’t a calling. It’s not a spiritual awakening. It’s a profession.
You need to understand psychology. Communication. Business models. Market dynamics. Behavioural patterns. Human complexity.
Not just vibes and validation.

Some of the worst coaches we’ve seen are the most “heart-centred.” Because they confuse being nice with being useful.

The job of a business coach is not to sit silently and nod. It’s to challenge. To question. To spot blind spots. To give a client the kind of uncomfortable clarity that shifts everything.

You can be warm. You can be kind. But you’d better know your sh*t.

They never want you to leave.

Not because they care. But because you’re a recurring revenue stream.

They coach like it’s a Netflix subscription: no real plan, just vague weekly chats and an invoice.

You bring up the same problems. They nod wisely. You leave with a mild sense of insight and a lighter wallet.

But here’s the truth: coaching should move you forward. It should create momentum. Progress. Clarity. And eventually independence.

If your coach’s business model relies on you never solving the thing you came to them for, they’re not a coach. They’re a parasite.

That’s how long it’s been since a group of coaches walked into a room in Edinburgh, with open minds, a healthy dose of scepticism, and—if we’re being honest—no idea what to expect.

What’s happened since?

Well, a lot.

Conversations that started in that room are now turning into collaborations.

Coaches who were questioning their approach are now doubling down with more clarity, more confidence, and a deeper sense of why they do what they do.

Some are rewriting their offers. Some are rebuilding their businesses. Some are just finally being honest with themselves about what kind of coach they don’t want to be.

And maybe that’s the real point of the Kick Ass Culture Coach programme.

It’s not about buzzwords, frameworks, or pretending you’ve got it all figured out.

It’s about unlearning. Challenging the fluff. Finding your edge again.

The event was a catalyst. But the real shift is what’s happened after.

Woo-Woo Is Killing Coaching Credibility

When did coaching become a full moon ceremony?

We’ve got “abundance coaches” aligning chakras. “Business healers” burning sage on sales calls. And programmes where the onboarding form asks for your moon sign.

Look, nothing wrong with a bit of spirituality. But if your business strategy includes crystals, tarot, and the Law of Attraction and excludes anything to do with cashflow, product-market fit, or audience psychology, you’re not coaching. You’re cosplaying as a spiritual guide.

And the result?

Clients lose trust. The industry loses credibility. And real coaches get lumped in with “vibe mentors” who think LinkedIn is a place to share shadow work.
