🚧 Lift Decommissioning Case Study – London 🚧

Our team at Feltham Demolition Services recently completed a full lift decommissioning project in London, delivering the works safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.

The lift car was first brought to the top of the shaft, allowing the counterweights to remain at the base. Using the existing lifting beam—doubling the car’s carrying capacity—we installed a block and tackle system secured with 4-tonne shackles. This allowed the lift bonds to be released while keeping the fail-safe system fully operational and enabled controlled lowering of the lift without moving the counterweights.

Once positioned at each floor level, our skilled operatives safely accessed the lift, removed the running rails by hand, and passed them out through the lift door opening. The lift was then lowered floor by floor using the block and tackle, repeating the process down to the basement.

As the works progressed, lift doors were removed at each level and replaced with securely fixed 18mm ply hoardings. To ensure maximum safety while the job was in progress, bespoke wooden hoardings were installed on every level, remaining in place until all on-site works were fully complete.

At basement level, the running gear, lift car, and counterweights were removed, leaving the shaft completely empty and ready for the installation of a new lift.

♻️ Demolition with the Environment in Mind
Sustainability is at the heart of every project at Feltham Demolition Services. All materials removed from the lift shaft were taken to a recycling facility, where they were processed and reused on projects across London. Nothing went to waste, and the project was completed with minimal impact on the surrounding area.
