Words matter.

If you’re experiencing a strong emotion, take a moment to consider what to call it.

But don’t stop there: once you’ve identified it, try to come up with two more words that describe how you are feeling. You might be surprised at the breadth of your emotions—or that you’ve unearthed a deeper emotion buried beneath the more obvious one.

It’s equally important to do this with so-called “positive” emotions as well as so-called “negative” ones. Being able to say that you are excited about a new job (not just “nervous”) or trusting of a colleague (not just “he’s nice”), for example, will help you set your intentions for the role or the relationship in a way that is more likely to lead to success down the road.

Always a techie at heart, I’m looking forward to today at the London Tech Week Summit.

In addition to some networking, I’ll be soaking up insights at Future of Work events including ‘The Great Resignation: Surviving the Talent Shortage’, ‘The Power of a Purpose-driven Organisation’, ‘Creating Inclusive Cultures’ and ‘Individualising the Employee Experience – is 2022 the year of the employee’.

Lots of my favourite topics, plus ‘Wellbeing in the Workplace’ to start the day – what could be better?

Plus, the Elizabeth Tower is looking wonderful after its refurb!

Susan David’s work around emotions is hugely helpful for those of us wanting to understand ourselves better and be overwhelmed by our feelings less often. I recommend her book, ‘Emotional Agility’ to anyone wanting to find out more.

When you separate your identity from your emotions, you create space. And within this space exists the power of choice—the choice to be who you want to be.

Consider the actions you can take to mindfully address the issue at hand. Make choices that push you toward your values instead of leading you away from them.

Highly recommend Susan David's work for those wanting to work with their emotions, be true to themselves or even, for overcoming stress, anxiety or depression.

How are your anxiety levels following the latest UK lockdown announcement? Are you feeling differently about this lockdown than previous ones?

How can we get through this as resiliently as we can?

Over the last year I’ve coached a number of leaders and professionals who were finding resilience and focus difficult (particularly with the effects of the pandemic on work and life).

I introduced them to a way of thinking that made a big difference - this tool in the image below. It's adapted from Stephen R Covey’s ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’.

Its power is in the person being coached:

💎 becoming clearer about their thoughts by writing them down and seeing them written down

💎 clearly seeing what is within their control and what isn’t

💎 focusing their attention on the areas they can control

Our thoughts often run away with us, but with practice we can control them. This method can help us maintain resilience and focus and perhaps also lessen anxiety.

It's World Mental Health Day today. Mental Health issues have spiralled this year as everyone tries to cope with a vastly changed landscape. Being kind, talking to each other and having conversations can help so much. Sometimes those conversations can feel very uncomfortable, but can make a huge difference to someone's life.

The CIPD marks World Mental Health Day and urges employers to support and train line managers to ensure they can effectively help employees vulnerable to mental ill-health
