Ready to take your compost yard to the next level?

On June 26 at 13:00 (London time) we’re bringing together two industry heavyweights — Makis Baxevanis and Omar Haqqi — for a powerful, practical session on the equipment every modern compost yard must have.

Two experts. Two perspectives. One essential topic.
This isn’t a debate — it’s a professional dialogue between specialists with decades of hands‑on experience in composting and mushroom production. Expect clear explanations, different viewpoints, and real‑life examples that will help you understand what truly matters for efficiency, stability, and high‑quality compost.

You will learn:

- The 5 pieces of equipment no compost yard can operate without

- How different setups influence compost quality

- Practical insights from real farms around the world

- What experts recommend for stable, predictable results

If you work with compost — this session is for you.

One of our followers recently asked an important technical question about compost aeration:

“How many cubic meters of air per ton of compost, and at what pressure, should be supplied at the beginning of composting (first turning) and at the end of composting (last turning)?
Also, how many cubic meters of air per ton of compost should be circulated during pasteurization, and at what pressure?”

Our UMDIS Mushroom Agency consultant Baxevanis shared his expert explanation:

The required air volume depends heavily on the structure of the compost after pre‑wetting, mixing with chicken manure, gypsum, and other ingredients, as well as the total water content.

- Early stage (filling the bunker):
Farms typically need 10–20 m³ of air per ton to achieve a fast temperature rise.
Pressure can reach up to 3000 Pa.

- After mixing and transferring to the next bunker:
The compost becomes more active, so air volume may be increased slightly and gradually to avoid dryness.

- Pasteurization:
Depending on the tunnel type (spigots or grid floor) and a standard filling of 1 ton per m², farms use 150–400 m³ of air per ton, with 4000–6000 Pa pressure.

All parameters depend on structure, moisture, activity, and temperature.
From the very beginning, it is essential to maintain above 8% oxygen.

Every compost yard has its own approach — there is no universal standard, only principles and correct interpretation.

Today is the third day of our Button Mushroom Growing Course in Poland at the Fungi Team Farm.

This feedback comes from our student Fatih Demiral, an experienced grower from Bolu who has been in the mushroom industry for more than 20 years.

Fatih manages 18 production rooms with a total capacity of 180 tons, and he has been following UMDIS and Iurie Boiciuc for a long time on social media.

Fatih noted that even after many years in the sector, there is always something new to learn. He emphasized that he and his colleagues are open to improving their systems and have already begun redesigning their growing rooms according to the recommendations provided during the course.

The next course will take place in Turkey on September 3–5, 2026, at the Dirican Mantar farm https://umdis.org/product/button-mushroom-growing-course-6/
