Sgt Jack Casselden was a navigator flying Wellington bombers with 99 Squadron, based at Newmarket. His plane was shot down early in the war although by that time he had already completed 27 missions. He was one of only two crew members to get out of their burning plane. The German doctor who patched him up recognised him from before the war from when they both lived in Scotland. The doctor could even remember the name of the barmaid at the local hotel where they both went for a drink. Casselden spent time in several POW camps including Stalag Luft III, made famous by the film “The Great Escape”. Casselden always considered himself not important enough to be selected to escape but he did help distribute the soil whilst the tunnel was being excavated. His great friend, Tom Kirkby-Green, also from 99 Squadron, was one of the escapees but was captured and shot by the Germans. At the end of the war, with the Russians advancing, their German guards deserted them and Casselden and other POWs had to walk back across Europe until they met British forces. Whilst entitled to a War Pension he refused it. Some of his belongings, including a POW album, containing German propaganda photographs, his flying helmet and gloves etc are to be included in Lot 408 in our auction on Saturday 11 October. #
