As the world faces intensifying climate breakdown, economic inequality, and political instability, it’s easy to feel powerless. But one of the most impactful things we can do right now is vote for local leaders offering more than empty promises of economic growth.

We need people in office who prioritise cooperation over competition, sustainability over short-term gain, and shared well-being over individual wealth. This kind of leadership starts at the community level, but its impact reaches far beyond.

The uncomfortable truth is that economic decisions, including where manufacturing and investment return, are often made to serve the interests of the top 1%. Nationalist slogans like “Take Back Control” or “Make America Great Again” may stir emotion, but they distract from the deeper failures of an economy built on consumption and inequality.

Meanwhile, real solutions—collaborative, resilient, and just—are being shaped by global networks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the IPCC, the ILO, the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, the Global Greens, and more. These frameworks are focused on human and planetary well-being, not just profit.

Yet, these global efforts need local partners—leaders who understand that building a sustainable future begins in our neighbourhoods, towns, and cities.

Your vote is a powerful act of responsibility. In the local elections, choose candidates who care about people, place, and the planet. Change doesn’t come from the top down—it’s built from the ground up.

Let’s vote for the future we want to see.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Coin Street, an extraordinary area in the heart of London. Amidst the towering skyscrapers and luxurious developments that symbolise wealth and affluence, Coin Street stands out as a beacon of how social housing and enterprise can flourish. Coin Street Community Builders (CSCB) have transformed this area into a vibrant, inclusive community, showcasing that sustainable living and social equality are attainable even in the bustling centre of a global financial hub.

Last week provided a significant surge in inspiration through participation in two evening events and an all-day conference. The week commenced on Tuesday at the Torbay Health and Wellbeing VCSE Network Annual Showcase Event, where numerous outstanding community-focused organisations and individuals shared compelling stories about their impactful work supporting people across the Torbay area.

The momentum continued Wednesday with the launch of the Plymouth Social Enterprise Festival, commemorating a decade since Plymouth earned the designation as an official Social Enterprise Place by Social Enterprise UK. The evening gathered visitors from the SEUK Places network, reflecting on the city's success story and discussing the future of the UK's first Social Enterprise City.

Thursday brought the Eastern Devon’s Local Care Partnership 3rd Annual Conference – “A Good Place,” which, like the preceding days, attracted a substantial turnout from voluntary, community, and social enterprise organisations. The day explored opportunities to enhance public sector/community engagement and collaboration in developing community solutions.

Despite the challenges posed by extreme social issues, last week showcased the resilience of our community's innovative thinkers and doers. They step forward, roll up their sleeves, and dive into the practical aspects of producing and implementing solutions. I have always appreciated the tangible impact that comes with taking action.

It remains a privilege to be in the company of those dedicating their time and energy to finding innovative ways to deliver support to individuals with needs. Being part of a team that actively contributes to developing solutions is an enriching experience.

Last week was a remarkable celebration of proactive efforts, outstanding individuals, and a community committed to making a positive difference.

As NHS Integrated Care Systems and Local Authorities in England face resource constraints while introducing a new health and care system, it's crucial to emphasize the invaluable role of the Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector.

Throughout the UK, countless nonprofit organisations, initiated by community members identifying unmet needs have demonstrated remarkable innovation and problem-solving abilities. They often begin with limited resources but achieve impressive outcomes.

Promoting prevention relies on collaborative leadership between VCSE and the public sector, co-designing and executing community solutions with innovative investment strategies.

This approach also necessitates a shift from the traditional focus on health and care to acknowledge the interconnected determinants affecting individuals, families, and communities, with the establishment of collaborative service structures that can address multiple needs and guide individuals toward better outcomes.

This transition can be anchored in a focus on placemaking, with community-based and led participation at its centre, that capitalises on its local assets, the local capability to innovate, and the potential of local resources to redefine place in a way that positively contributes to people's health, happiness, and well-being.

Despite today's significant challenges, my optimism remains unwavering as I see our communities continuing to be hubs of innovation and invention.

Some business services provided every day have a really significant social value attached to what they do, it is a shame that this frequently gets lost in the focus on driving up productivity and profit.

Corporate social responsibility offers the mechanism by which business practices could be re-evaluated and perhaps adapted to utilising social value/well-being development measures, alongside profitability and growth. To support achieving a greater connection with clients (communities) and improved sustainability addressing social, economic and ecological needs in a more balanced way.

Certainly, the investment eCulture Solutions continues to make in the ongoing development and application of our Social Return on Investment (SROI) model, is encouraged by the commercial shift occurring to adopt CSR.

A UK Gov Dept for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport commissioned report (Loneliness Monetisation Report - horrible title!!) estimates the annual well-being cost per person of mild loneliness at £6,429, mild to moderate at £8,157 to £9,537 and moderate to severe at least £9,976.

Applying this to an assessment of the numbers of people suffering from various states of loneliness in Devon produced in 2018 translates to an annual social and economic impact in excess of £77m on a basis of 12,000+ mild loneliness sufferers and £48m for 6,000+ in the intense or moderate category.

Naturally, there is a lot more to explain in these numbers but at least in a crude way, this suggested there could be enormous social and economic value to be gained from encouraging more of the activities such as that described in this article.

Some 200 Jumbo supermarkets will be opening up tills where clients can stop for a chat rather than pay for their shopping as quickly as possible. Call out to all those interested in supporting development of in the Exeter / Devon area

In 2018, Tech for Good Exeter was launched - a meetup for people working at the intersection of non-profits and technology in Exeter and nearby. Three amazing meet ups where the people got together to network and learn from each other. And then Covid happened and everything ground to a halt!

Well, it is about to get going again and it would be great to see lots of people become involved! Organised by Michael McAndrew and colleagues at Third Sector Design Please the relaunch event takes place on the evening of Wednesday 30th November, starting with a fairly informal event where everyone can reconnect and talk about the future of our network.

If you have any questions about the event, or ideas for topics we should be discussing, please get in contact with Rebecca ([email protected]) or Michael ([email protected]).

In-person Event - We're now ready to get going again and we'd love for you to be involved! Please come to our relaunch event where we can reconnect and talk about the future of our network.
