Meet Simon Nicholls, Founder & CEO of Olympus Power.

With a background spanning renewable energy, sustainability and environmental economics, Simon has spent his career exploring how businesses can make sustainability work commercially, not simply talk about it.

Today, that means helping organisations take greater control of their energy, reduce costs, improve resilience and make smarter long term energy decisions.

This September, Simon is taking that experience to Ideas Fest 2026, joining a panel discussion with Quincey Katie Ankrett, CPP, APMP, Chantal Kerr-Sheppard and Shiv Misra:

Sustainability Is a Strategy, Not a Sticker

Expect a conversation about moving beyond green claims and making sustainability a genuine part of business strategy.

📅 Wednesday 9th September
🕒 15:00 to 15:45
📍 Growth Village, Engine Room

When was the last time you remembered to have fun at work?

As we return from the last Bank Holiday of the year, Rory Sutherland's reminder to always have fun feels particularly well timed.

So here's a question to take into Tuesday:

Is there a way you could inject a little more fun into what you do today?

That's certainly part of the philosophy behind Ideas Fest, often described as the “Glastonbury for business”, bringing entrepreneurs and business leaders together for two days that are deliberately a little different from your typical business event.

Olympus Power Founder & CEO Simon Nicholls will be joining the line-up this year, speaking on:

Sustainability Is a Strategy, Not a Sticker

📅 Wednesday 9th September

We report on the advantages and challenges of organic photovoltaic solar modules - a technology of the future.

What is your initial reaction to the words organic photovoltaic solar modules (OPVs)? Do you imagine sheets of some kind of vegetation, moss for example, connected to an electric cable to facilitate drawing off any electricity generated when the plants are exposed to sunlight? This scenario might...

A brilliant example of young innovation making a global impact. A student has developed a low-cost, solar-powered water purification system that could bring safe drinking water to off-grid communities, proving how clean energy and bright ideas can help solve some of the world's biggest challenges.

Divyasri Kothapalli's project uses a Fresnel lens to concentrate sunlight, boil contaminated water, and condense steam into clean water, in a low-cost solution recognized at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and aimed at rural communities without reliable access to energy. A water purification system...

The data centre boom is creating a parallel growth industry: opposition to itself.

New developments are facing local opposition powerful enough to delay or stop projects altogether. In the US, 75 projects worth $130bn were blocked or delayed during the first three months of 2026 alone, according to Data Center Watch.

Many concerns centre around energy, water and land use, meaning addressing community impact can no longer be reactionary. It needs to be considered from the beginning.

We're already seeing some fascinating approaches.

🇸🇪 In Sweden, waste heat from a data centre will heat a glasshouse, allowing cucumbers to be grown inside the Arctic Circle.

🇫🇮 In Finland, a data centre transfers heat to a neighbouring supermarket, providing most of its heating requirements.

🇨🇳 In Beijing, Spark761 integrates a data centre into the city's arts district, including exhibition space and a theatre.

As inference computing grows and facilities move closer to end users to reduce latency, smaller urban data centres are also likely to become more common.

Data centres are now designated as national critical infrastructure in the UK. Like other major infrastructure before them, they aren't going away.

The challenge for the industry is bigger than simply building more capacity.

It's figuring out how data centres can become better neighbours to the communities around them.

Today, we're joining millions around the world in remembering the late, great, Dolly Parton, whose extraordinary legacy extended far beyond music.

An artist, entrepreneur and philanthropist who built an unmistakable identity and remained true to it throughout an extraordinary career.

Her words are a fitting reminder for all of us in business: know what you stand for, understand the impact you want to make and pursue it with purpose.

Rest in peace, Dolly Parton. 1946 - 2026.
