Good meeting with the Secrets of the Solent Project Team from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. Phil Collins is acting as project monitor on behalf of the Heritage Fund.

The four‐year project involving the Solent and its internationally important marine habitats and species, which are amongst the most diverse in the UK. The area is under threat from pollution (including marine plastics),commercial fishing and recreational angling practices and the impacts of anchoring in sensitive habitats.

The Secrets of the Solent project’s principal aims are to:

* Increase understanding and inspire interest and involvement in the Solent’s exceptional marine environment

* Promote and encourage positive behaviour in order to limit damage to Marine Conservation Zones and other Marine Protected Areas

* Raise the profile of Marine Protected Areas (including MCZs) and the heritage they contain.

Wheal Martyn China Clay Works Project

Formative Evaluation

We've completed the formative evaluation stage of the £1.35M Clay Works projects that will conserve the historic Pan Kiln and Mica Dry buildings. The project will improve how the story of the industry is told across the site and deliver a programme of exhibitions, events and activities to attract more people to this incredible site.

We've facilitated focus group workshops, helped develop visitor questionnaires and other techniques to help ensure that the new interpretation and activities programmes will help develop the museum's audiences.

Greatly enjoyed chairing the Devon Local Nature Partnership's Community Action for Wildlife Conference yesterday. So many great projects being taken forward across the county by local communities and a desire and need to do much more.

A big thank you to all the speakers, workshop leaders and the food providers for making it an excellent day.

Lots of support for the idea of developing a network of Parish Wildlife Wardens and Community Wildlife Champions.

Cornish Buildings Group 50th Anniversary Conference

Phil Collins presented a joint paper with Dr Andy King on Cornish Elvans. They are some of Cornwall’s most distinctive and attractive building stones. They resemble granites in composition but are typically much finer-grained and vary from pale grey to buff in colour.

The two day conference run in conjunction with Historic England and the National Trust explored and discussed what is unique about Cornish buildings.
