When first born, baby tummies are really tiny. So they need to feed little and often and can quickly become hungry again.😅

It's important to respond to their feeding cues and feed them whenever they are showing signs that they are hungry (even if it feels like you literally just fed them!).🤱🏽

For the first few days your body will produce colostrum, which is a highly concentrated form of milk, dense with rich nutrients for your baby. It's all they need to begin with until your milk comes in on day 4/5.👶🏽

Feed duration and time in-between feeds will change a lot in the first few months but soon settles down and you'll find a rhythm and routine. But you will also see different patterns as they grow and may need to feed much more frequently for periods of time. This is called cluster feeding, it's your baby's clever way of stimulating and upping your supply to meet their growing needs.💕

Just remember, every baby is different, some prefer short frequent feeds and some prefer long feeds and some a bit of both so there's no right or wrong way to breastfeed.🤩

Your midwives will help you with latch and positioning before you are discharged and in follow up appointments if needed. We also dedicate a whole two hour Parentwise session to breastfeeding covering everything needed to help you get breast feeding off to a good start.🩷

Celebrating World Breast Feeding Week!

You may have breastfed for the first few days, the first few months or the first few years!

You may have express fed or combi-fed or be tandem-feeding.

However long you did it for and however you did it - we celebrate you and your journey!

Breastfeeding journeys might not always be straight-forward, easy, or look how you thought they would look. A lot of mums stop breastfeeding because they felt unsupported or were unsure of how to access the support they needed.

So this week especially, we want to help raise awareness of the support out there and help you feel a little bit more prepared for when you start your journey

🤍 Hearing feedback like this reminds me why we love what we do.

Preparing for birth is about so much more than understanding labour. It's about building confidence, making informed choices and feeling supported as you step into parenthood.

One of the things we love most about Parentwise is watching complete strangers become friends and seeing those friendships continue long after the babies arrive.

✨ September and November bookings are now open.

If you're expecting a baby and looking for a warm, midwife-led antenatal course in Exeter, we'd love to welcome you.

Reviews like this mean the world 🤍
My husband and I attended Parentwise, Paddy's six-week antenatal course before welcoming our son, Emrys, into the world on 4th April, and honestly cannot recommend it highly enough.
The course covered everything we could have hoped for and more, from the different stages of labour and birth through to breastfeeding and the often-overlooked postpartum period. Every session was packed with practical information, but what really made the course exceptional was Paddy herself.
Paddy's knowledge, experience and delivery are second to none. She has an incredible way of explaining things that makes you feel informed, empowered and completely in control. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by the huge life change ahead, we came away from each session feeling confident, prepared and excited for what was to come. One of the things we particularly loved was how inclusive the course was for partners. Paddy made my husband feel just as important and involved as was throughout the entire experience. Her famous "Paddy's Top Tips" for dads were invaluable and gave him practical ways to support me during labour, birth and beyond. We both felt equipped to advocate for ourselves, ask questions and make informed decisions throughout our birth journey.
