One of the things visitors to often comment on is the passion of the in the room, and they don’t come much more passionate than last week’s feature speaker, Simon Hall of Simon Hall - Will Writing Services.

Simon shared the story behind his business - a fantastic local success story. Since launching in 2019, the same year in which he joined , he and his wife Linda have grown the business to a team of 10 advisers covering Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset, while also attracting enquiries from across the country.

Simon credits much of that growth to their strong values: quality over quantity, personal service and relationships built on trust.

That approach has clearly resonated with clients, with more than ⭐350 five-star reviews⭐ and a reputation for making feel straightforward, personal and reassuring.

What stood out most was how the business has managed to grow without losing the personal touch that made it successful in the first place.

Thank you, Simon, for a great presentation — and for the reminder that protecting your family, your assets and your wishes for the future can start with something as simple as a conversation over a cup of tea 🍵 in the comfort of one's own home.

A lot of fun was had at this week’s meeting, thanks to a brilliant interactive game show-style presentation from Krystal Langford of Mantracom.🎤🎯

It was a great reminder that although meetings follow the same structure each week, there is always plenty of room for personality, energy and creativity.

Alongside the fun, Krystal packed in some really useful insight into how MantraCom helps businesses find the right telecoms setup. Because no mobile network guarantees service everywhere, the best option depends not just on where a business is based, but also where its staff travel and where reliable coverage is most important.

She also shared an eye-watering example of why the right setup matters. Two employees travelling in the USA racked up more than £21,000 in roaming charges in just a few days because there were no suitable bundles or spend caps in place. Thanks to MantraCom’s relationships with the network, that bill was eventually reduced to around £70. No wonder their clients leave such strong reviews ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

And mobile is only one part of the offer. MantraCom also provides internet, VoIP systems, leased lines, vehicle tracking, business energy and commercial water, plus handset support and help with locking in future energy contracts.

Thank you, Krystal, for a presentation that was entertaining, memorable and packed with practical advice 👏

At last Wednesday’s meeting, we enjoyed a feature presentation from our resident mastermind — yes, she really has been a contestant — Claire Barrow of Simon A Martin Accountants in Honiton.

Claire is the firm’s , speaks fluent “HMRC”, and as a Chartered Tax Adviser with experience across accountancy and legal services, she brings a huge amount of practical knowledge for owners.

What stood out most was the emphasis on ongoing, practical advice. Simon A Martin does far more than simply produce accounts at year end — they help clients understand their numbers, make better decisions and plan ahead.

The firm is also strongly rooted in the local community, supporting local sportspeople and teams, and working with a number of charities and CICs. It is easy to see why they are so well regarded in Honiton and beyond.

A really useful presentation from Claire, and a great reminder that the value of a good goes far beyond submitting the numbers.

And if the tax conversation ever runs dry, Claire can probably also help your pub quiz team to victory 🧠!

It was a busy meeting yesterday morning at , with not one but two member presentations.

Our featured 10-minute speaker was Kevin Bowers of Chartered Edge Financial Planning, who shared some valuable insights into investment, inheritance tax and later-life planning.

Kevin’s role as a is to help people understand their options and protect their interests. His key message was that taking advice early can create far greater choice, control and financial peace of mind later 😊.

Kevin also offers presentations and drop-in clinics for medium and larger employers, giving staff access to practical financial guidance as a valuable and often overlooked .

We also heard from , CEO of .

Age UK Exeter has supported local people aged 50+ for almost 50 years, with its oldest current service user aged 102! Its work centres on , and .

The charity is looking for new , more collection-pot locations across Exeter, and more support for its fantastic .

Two different but equally important reminders of the value of planning ahead, building strong and making sure people can access help when they need it.

👉👉At this week’s meeting, our 10-minute speaker was Chris Outlaw of Elements Brand Management, who gave members a really useful whistle-stop guide to development.

Chris shared some valuable insight into the work his business does to bring confused, scaling brands into alignment so growth 🌱 is built on strong foundations.

And those foundations really matter, because when a brand is unclear, strategic decision-making becomes harder and can stall.

Chris explained how Elements is different from a more traditional brand agency. As a unified , they do not just create brands - they work with businesses to align strategy, messaging, and so the business presents itself consistently across every touchpoint. The result is a much more joined-up customer experience.

This is especially valuable for scaling businesses, complex organisations and brands at transition points, when growth is happening but the brand itself feels outdated, inconsistent or unclear.

It was a really useful presentation from Chris, and a strong reminder of just how important is when it comes to supporting business growth 📈.

If you’d like to hear valuable weekly business insights from experts like Chris and our other and — while also building strong referral relationships — we’d love to welcome you to visit a Exeter City Wall meeting.

Yesterday’s beautifully air-conditioned meeting gave us all a welcome break from the heat ☀ and the perfect chance for Jake Pattie of First cut trees and Landscaping to deliver a brilliant 10-minute presentation on his growing business.

Jake said he was born to cut trees, and after hearing him speak, it was easy to believe. His passion, experience and arboricultural knowledge came across straight away.

First Cut Trees and Landscaping is a 5-star reviewed business with a broad offer - from felling, hedge cutting, grounds clearance, woodland clearance and landscaping, through to specialist work such as forest school risk assessments and support with Tree Preservation Order applications.

What really stood out was the sheer scale and variety of the work they take on. One day it might be a domestic hedge-cutting job; the next it could involve dismantling a dead 110ft cedar tree in 3-tonne sections, with multiple heavy vehicles required on site. Not exactly your standard day at the office!

Jake and his team work across both commercial and domestic projects, and the photos he shared - including some pretty striking shots of Jake working at serious height in some exceedingly tall trees - showed just how specialist this work can be.

A fantastic presentation and a real insight into a business that is clearly going from strength to strength 💪. Many thanks to Jake.

And as Exeter City Wall continues to grow, we’d love to welcome more owners to come and see what we’re all about. If you’re curious about BNI and want to find out why it's the most successful organisation in the world, why not join us for a visit?

Another great morning at on Weds, where this week we heard from long-time member Beverley Anne Ward in her 10-minute presentation.

Bev has been with for 11 years and previously worked with Yellow Pages, so she brings a huge amount of advertising knowledge and experience to the room.

It was really interesting to hear more about why The One Magazine continues to work so well for local businesses. With retention rates of 70%+, advertisers clearly see real value in it and stay with the publication for the long term — always a good sign that something is doing its job properly.

The magazine itself offers a great mix of features, advertising, local information and featured walks, and we also heard about the competition that appears in each edition. This gives businesses the opportunity to provide a prize and receive a full-page advertorial in return, which is a brilliant way to boost visibility while engaging readers at the same time.

In many ways, The One Magazine mirrors what does so well — helping build trust, visibility and credibility through a well-established and well-connected network.

A big thank you to Bev for a great presentation and a reminder that trusted local marketing channels still have a very important role to play.

And of course, if you’re a owner and you’ve been thinking about visiting BNI Exeter City Wall, now is a great time to do it. The mornings are brighter, the room is welcoming, and the breakfast is delicious!

While much of Devon was no doubt eyeing up the beach in this glorious heat ☀️, the members were up early yesterday morning for weekly , rewarded for their sacrifice with a lovely air conditioned meeting room 😊

This week it was the turn of Ben Rourke of BSR Decorating to deliver the 10-minute presentation, giving the chapter an insight into his business, that has gone from strength to strength.

With ⭐ 100% 5-star reviews ⭐, BSR’s clients range from high-end domestic properties to heritage properties, schools, care homes and an increasing volume of commercial work.

Ben spoke about the pride he takes in running the business to the highest standards, taking PPE and safety seriously, and maintaining exceptional standards of and customer service. Over the years, the scale of the work may have changed, but the commitment to first-class service has not.

One of the most powerful parts of Ben’s presentation was hearing him say that he would not be where he is today without BNI. He credits BNI Exeter City Wall with playing a major role in BSR’s success by introducing him to quality business owners who value relationships in the same way he does.

With the business continuing to grow, expansion planned, and 2026 shaping up to be a stellar year, is clearly a business with real momentum.

Great meeting, fantastic presentation, and a big thank you to Ben.
