Big sustainability wins sometimes start with a group of people coming together to make a difference in their community.

Our Community Group / Charity / Non-Profit category celebrates organisations in Exeter that are putting sustainability into action, whether that’s through environmental projects, improving social wellbeing, reducing waste, supporting their local community or finding new ways to create positive change.

Could your organisation be this year’s winner?

There was plenty going on beyond our sites and offices at Coastal Recycling yesterday ♻️

As our teams continued to keep materials moving through our operations, delivering and exchanging skips and roros, as well as processing tonnes of waste and recycling, others were busy representing Coastal at events throughout the region.

🤝 Beth, Emily and Nicole attended the South West Employee Ownership conference picking up ideas and inspiration on how we can continue to grow and develop as an employee-owned business.

🏆 Barry spent the evening at the NDMA North Devon Manufacturers Association Awards, which we were proud to sponsor, presenting the Environmental Award to Accord Healthcare, one of our valued clients.

🧠 Meanwhile, the finance team put their knowledge to the test at the Lloyd Barnes Recruitment Quiz Night. A strong first half had hopes high... unfortunately things went a little downhill after the break. Better luck next time!

Days like these show that Coastal is about much more than recycling. It's about learning, supporting our communities, celebrating success and having a bit of fun along the way.

Did you know that construction and demolition waste accounts for over 60% of the UK's total waste stream?

That makes what happens to waste on site more important than ever.

By working closely with our customers, we turn waste data into real results.

Through site visits, waste audits and tailored recommendations, we've helped businesses in the construction and housebuilding sectors achieve recycling rates of 96% and higher, while reducing disposal costs.

For us, it's not just about collecting waste. It's about finding smarter ways to recycle more and working together to deliver better outcomes for both our customers and the planet. ♻️🌍♻️🌍

Last week, we joined the fantastic Earth Action North Devon for their annual Tarka Trail & Estuary Clean Up.

Kurt, Gary and Khalik were among 106 volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to help collect an incredible 505kg of waste 🚮

Along the stretch between Chivenor and Weare Giffard, volunteers uncovered hundreds of plastic bottles, an inflatable mattress, traffic cones, two car seats, and the usual assortment of wrappers and glass.

A huge well done to everyone who gave up their time to help protect and preserve this beautiful part of North Devon. Every piece of litter removed makes a difference 👏

A major step forward for transparency in the waste industry 📢

From 1st October 2026, Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) will replace paper-based waste records with a single digital platform, making it easier than ever to track waste from collection through to its final destination.

The benefits are clear: greater transparency, improved accountability, reduced paperwork, better data to support recycling and resource recovery, and stronger safeguards against waste crime. By creating a clear digital trail, DWT will help build a more efficient, sustainable and trusted waste industry ♻️

Want to learn more about what DWT means for your business, our customers and the wider waste sector? Read our latest blog: https://coastaluk.co.uk/blog/digital-waste-tracking/

A huge shout out to Charlie Nielson, our Site Manager, for completing an awe-inspiring running challenge this August!👏

Alongside his running partner, Ryan, Charlie ran the entire length of the country from John O'Groats to Land's End, covering more than 1,000 miles.

Despite battling an achilles injury and running in the extreme summer heat, he showed incredible determination and resilience to complete this immense physical and mental challenge.

As if that wasn't impressive enough, Charlie also helped raise an amazing £16,750 for Pancreatic Cancer UK, making the achievement even more meaningful.

A fantastic accomplishment by both Charlie and Ryan, but we're especially proud to see one of our own take on such an extraordinary challenge.
