World Otter Day, 2026 🦦

Today, we’re celebrating otters! Social, playful, and excellent swimmers, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a European Protected Species native to the UK. Following a major decline in UK populations, otters have made a successful recovery thanks to conservation efforts and strong protective legislation. However, populations are still threatened by poor water quality and persistent chemicals.

💚Otter Training Course – Last Few Spaces Remaining!💚
If you love otters as much as we do at Richard Green Ecology, now’s your chance to book onto our otter training courses taking place on 2nd and 3rd July before places sell out.

The courses will cover otter ecology, survey techniques, and mitigation measures used to help protect wild otter populations.

See you there! 🦦

International Day for Biological Diversity, 2026 🌍🌿

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible variety of life on Earth and the importance of protecting it for future generations. From habitats and ecosystems to the species that rely on them, biodiversity plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy and resilient environment.

🌿 At Richard Green Ecology, we’re proud to support biodiversity through ecological surveys, mitigation, habitat management, and conservation-focused solutions that help balance development with nature recovery. 🌿

What can you do to help your local biodiversity?

🌿Let your garden grow wild to support pollinators and other wildlife.
🌿Avoid using pesticides and herbicides.
🌿Create wildlife-friendly spaces such as ponds, log piles and wildflower areas.
🌿Record wildlife sightings to help monitor species through citizen science.

Every species matters, and every action to protect biodiversity makes a difference! 💚

Great Crested Newt Training Course Highlights ✨

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a training course focused on one of the UK’s native amphibians, the great crested newt (Triturus cristatus), commonly abbreviated as GCN. 🦎

As a European Protected Species, GCNs require careful consideration during development projects to help maintain healthy populations. Through habitat monitoring, surveys, and protected species licensing, ecologists can assess potential impacts and help safeguard the future of this species. 💚

✏️The classroom session covered GCN lifecycle, biology, diet, and habitat, alongside licensing, survey techniques, and identification of the UK’s native newt species, including great crested, smooth (Lissotriton vulgaris), and palmate newts (Lissotriton helveticus).

🦎Our first practical session took place in the evening, when newts are most active, at a nearby site with two ponds. The group carried out a Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) survey, egg searches, and torch surveys for newts. We observed palmate newts and GCN in the ponds and were able to carefully handle a few individuals to study their identifying features in more detail. Bottle traps were then set overnight in hopes to capture GCN for us to observe in the morning.

🌞The following morning, we returned early to release any captured newts as soon as possible. Although no newts were caught in the bottle traps this time, we observed more newts in the ponds and had another opportunity for close-up identification before the course concluded.

🌿Keep a look out for our upcoming training courses on more European Protected Species 🌿

Today is Endangered Species Day... 🌳

Endangered Species Day is an opportunity to recognise the importance of protecting the wildlife that shares our landscapes and the conservation efforts that help vulnerable species recover.

Here in the UK, several native species are endangered due to habitat loss, climate change, and human pressures, including our beloved grey long-eared bat Plecotus austriacus (image 1). 🦇

Although this species is endangered, there is still hope to turn things around through effective conservation efforts, legislation, and public support. 💚

Take one of Britain’s greatest conservation success stories: the red kite Milvus milvus (image 2). Once driven close to extinction in Britain, the species is now thriving again thanks to legal protection, habitat management and dedicated conservation work.

At Richard Green Ecology, we’re passionate about protecting British wildlife and ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy thriving native species across our landscapes. 🌿

🦇 Happy Bat Appreciation Day! 🦇

Today we are celebrating one of the UK’s most misunderstood yet essential mammals. Bats play a vital role in controlling insect populations and supporting healthy ecosystems.

All UK bat species are legally protected, reflecting their importance to our natural heritage, from common pipistrelles in our gardens to the rare greater horseshoe bats of the southwest.

At Richard Green Ecology, bats are at the heart of what we do. Through surveys and monitoring, we help ensure conservation and development work together to protect these remarkable species.

So tonight, take a moment to step outside at sunset, you might just catch a glimpse of them in action. 🌿

A great day learning all about one of the UK’s most fascinating mammals — the badger 🦡

Richard Green Ecology recently led a hands-on badger ecology and surveying day in East Devon, combining classroom learning with time out in the field. We covered everything from badger behaviour, diet and habitats to survey techniques and the legislation that protects them.

In the field, we put our skills to the test across three sites, identifying key signs like sett entrances, latrines, scratching posts and hair. We also learnt how to tell the difference between main, annex, subsidiary, and outlying setts, and how to spot whether they’re active.

There’s nothing quite like finding a busy main sett with multiple entrances, fresh bedding and clear signs of activity like footprints and claw marks, bringing their hidden world to life. It’s a great reminder of just how active and important badgers are within our landscapes, and why careful ecological survey work plays such a key role in protecting them.

A brilliant day in the field, learning all about these iconic and protected animals.

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming badger training days with Richard Green Ecology—our next badger courses are running on 5th & 6th October!
