🐴 Equine Influenza Update – Staying Vigilant 🐴
You may have seen recent reports of increasing cases of equine influenza in parts of the UK and this week, confirmed cases in Norfolk. While there is no need for alarm, it is a timely reminder of the importance of good biosecurity and vaccination.
🔹 Check your horse's influenza vaccination status. Current evidence shows that protection against equine influenza is strongest when boosters are given at shorter intervals in horses at higher risk of exposure. The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) supports six-monthly influenza boosters for horses that travel, compete or mix regularly with other horses, as this provides better protection than annual vaccination alone.
Even if your horse is not competing, we recommend checking that vaccinations are up to date and considering a booster if they are due within the next six months. Please contact the practice if you would like advice on the most appropriate vaccination schedule for your horse.
🔹 If your horse develops a fever, cough, nasal discharge or any other signs of respiratory disease please contact us immediately. We encourage all horse owners to monitor their horses closely, particularly if horses have been travelling, attending competitions, clinics or coming into contact with new horses or those that have travelled.
🔹 Good biosecurity remains essential. This applies both at home and at shows. Close contact, sharing of equipment and communal water trough use are all discouraged.
By remaining vigilant, maintaining sensible biosecurity measures and ensuring vaccinations are current, we can help reduce the risk of disease spread and keep your horses healthy. If you have any concerns about your horse, please don't hesitate to contact the team on 01328 864444.
