One thing I love about LEGO is that you rarely get it right the first time.
🔧 You build.
👀 You look.
🤔 You realise something doesn’t quite work.
🦋 You adjust.

Learning and leadership are surprisingly similar.

People often think confidence comes from getting things right straight away.

But most growth actually comes from:
🟣 trying something
🟣 reflecting
🟣 rebuilding slightly differently

That cycle of build → reflect → rebuild is where the real learning happens. 🧠

It’s also why experiential learning works so well.

👂People don’t just hear an idea.
🧪 They test it.
💡And suddenly the insight sticks.

What’s something you’ve had to rethink or rebuild recently?

In a session this week we talked about a very simple skill.

Listening. 👂

Not the polite nodding kind.

The kind where you actually stop planning what you're going to say next.

It sounds basic, but it’s surprisingly rare.

In leadership and facilitation people often focus on the big things.
🎯 Strategy
🔭 Vision
📈 Performance

But again and again I see the same truth:
🟣 The basics done well change everything.
❓ Clear questions
🤝 Genuine curiosity
🕊 Listening long enough for people to finish their thought

When that happens, conversations shift.
💡 Ideas surface
🗣 People speak more honestly
🧠 Teams start solving things together

Sometimes the most powerful leadership skill isn't saying more.

It's creating the space where others can.

What’s one “simple” leadership habit you think people underestimate?

Have you ever kept going with something… simply because you’ve already invested so much time in it?

I was watching LEGO Masters Australia recently and one of the teams mentioned how hard it is to change direction once you’ve spent hours building something.

Even when you can see it’s not quite working.
That’s the sunk cost effect.

Our brains quietly tell us:
🟣 You’ve already put so much time into this
🟣 You can’t change it now
🟣 Just keep going

AND sometimes the smartest move is actually to pause and rethink.

🪜Step back.
💨Take a breath.
📝Change the plan.

In leadership and learning I see this a lot. Projects, strategies, presentations, even ways of working that continue simply because people have already invested so much effort.

The real question isn’t “How much have I already put into this?”
It’s “What makes the most sense from here?”

That shift in thinking can be surprisingly powerful.

where have you seen the sunk cost effect show up at work?

Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes on Thursday. I really appreciated them. 🎂

It was a quieter birthday than usual this year, but in many ways that felt exactly right.

The messages, kind words and little moments of connection meant a lot.

If anyone is wondering about a birthday gift… 🎁
The best one you could give is simply to keep doing what many of you already do:
👍💗 liking and commenting on posts
💡 sharing ideas that resonate with you
🤝 inviting interesting people in your network to connect

Those small actions genuinely make a huge difference for a small business like mine.

Some weeks, the most useful thing you can do is pause.

Not to stop caring.

Not to lose momentum.

But to notice what’s actually working.

I see a lot of capable people pushing for answers when what they really need is a moment to step back and ask better questions. About their role. Their energy. Their impact. Their next move.

Reflection doesn’t slow progress.

It refines it.

This is something that shows up again and again in coaching and leadership work. When people create space to think, decisions become clearer and confidence follows more naturally.

If this week feels full, consider where a pause might help. I am also happy to be your pause, just shout!

Testimonial Tuesday 💬

I’ll always take “very interesting and effective”.

Learning doesn’t need to be complicated to land well. Sometimes it’s about creating the right space, asking better questions, and keeping things relevant.

Thanks to FidesOak® for the feedback and the engagement throughout the programme.

If this kind of learning approach resonates, I’m always happy to have a conversation.

Today is World Thinking Day 🌍 🍀

A day that has been marked every year on 22 February since 1926 as a moment of reflection and connection with people around the world. It began as a way for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to think about their sisters across countries and cultures, and to celebrate international friendship and shared values.

I find myself thinking about what this means in leadership and in work. Too often we sprint from task to task without pausing to think about:

🫂 Who we are connected to

💜 What we value beyond the urgent

🤔 The wider context in which our choices land

World Thinking Day is a reminder that thinking isn’t a luxury. It’s a practice; one that underpins clarity, empathy and better decisions.

Whether you’re leading a team, facilitating a learning moment, coaching someone through uncertainty, or making your own next choice, there’s power in slowing down enough to genuinely think.

Curious how you carve out thinking space in your week.

Growth mindset is often misunderstood.

It’s not about relentless positivity.

It’s about staying curious when something doesn’t work first time.

In a session this week, we talked less about “being optimistic” and more about how people respond when things feel uncomfortable, unfamiliar, or unfinished.

That’s where growth actually happens. In the pause before judgement. In the willingness to try again, differently.

This is a theme I see across leadership, communication, and confidence work. Progress comes from reflection, not pressure.

If this is something you’re navigating right now, you’re in good company.

Testimonial Tuesday 💬

This one really made me smile.

Helping people look at situations differently, and feel more confident in their role as a leader, is exactly what the Developing Leader programme is about.

Thank you to Forth Ports Limited and Port of Tilbury London for the trust, the participation and the honest feedback. It’s always a pleasure working with groups who are willing to reflect and grow.

If leadership development is on your radar this year, feel free to drop me a message.

A quiet truth about engaging and presenting virtually.

Energy doesn’t come from being louder.

It comes from being intentional.

When people know why they’re speaking, who they’re speaking to, and what they want to leave behind, the energy takes care of itself.

This has came up a few times this year. Less focus on performance. More focus on purpose. The shift was immediate.

It’s a reminder that presence is something you design, not something you force.

Curious if this mirrors your experience.

Testimonial Tuesday 💬

Simple. Clear. And very much appreciated.

What matters most to me in leadership development is that it’s not just interesting in the moment, but genuinely useful back in the day job.

Thank you to Technip and TechnipFMC for the feedback and for the thoughtful engagement throughout the programme.

Always happy to chat about leadership development that’s practical, reflective, and grounded in reality.
