Gool Peran Lowen! Happy St Piran’s Day!

Gool Peran Lowen! Happy St Piran’s Day! 🏴🏳️〓〓

Today we are sharing this beautifully coloured, illustrated postcard from the 1920s — part of the Perranzabuloe parish church collection — depicting the legendary arrival of St Piran in Cornwall.

According to tradition, St Piran crossed the Irish Sea from Ireland on a millstone, landing on Penhale Sands in the 5th century. There he built a small oratory, one of Cornwall’s earliest Christian sites.

Shifting dunes eventually buried the oratory, leading the community to build a second stone church slightly inland. But when mining activity later dried up the stream that protected it, the sands moved again.

By 1804, a third St Piran’s Church was built safely inland at Perranzabuloe, using stone rescued from the medieval church — including its tower, carried and rebuilt piece by piece.

A remarkable journey of legend, landscape and resilience.

Strong marks for Cornwall Marine Network in Ofsted report

A provider of marine apprenticeships in Cornwall has been praised for high-quality curriculums that "successfully address skills shortages in the area".

With 150 apprentices currently enrolled, including young learners aged 16 to 18, Cornwall Marine Network offers training mainly in boatbuilding, engineering and early years education, and also in other fields.

Here is some background and the details:

FSB Cornwall & Isles of Scilly is continuing to lead the Local Skills Improvement Plan on behalf of Skills England and again, we are working in close partnership, with Cornwall Council. Our role is to drive real change by tackling gaps in skills provision, improving access to support, and increasing awareness of local training. We are developing a practical, employer-led plan, and it is vital that it reflects real business experience.

The plan is set in statute, which means the actions it sets out must be delivered. To make sure it leads to meaningful outcomes, we need employers to share evidence of the skills challenges they face, including issues with recruiting people who have the right skills and behaviours to help their business grow and adapt. We want to understand what holds you back now and what support you will need in the future.

The Local Skills Improvement Plan is about action, not paperwork. By working directly with employers and testing what works in practice, we can identify the right actions, backed by government, that will make a genuine difference to businesses across the area.
