The sea has pulled me out of some really deep, dark holes.

It’s hard to explain, but there’s something about being in the sea that allows you to disconnect from what’s happening on land and just be.

After a while in the sea, usually after being battered on the head by several waves, I would start to feel a bit better. More human. A little more capable. Braver.

By the end of a surf, even a really bad one, I’d feel like I could do anything.

So when I heard about a charity taking kids surfing to help them feel better about themselves, I knew that I needed to be involved.

The first time I volunteered with the Wave Project, I turned up to find a bunch of nervous kids. No one was really talking, nor that keen on getting in the sea in early April. I didn’t blame them, it was mizzly and so windy that we were getting sandblasted in the face during the lesson on the beach.

But by the end of the two hours, we were all jumping around in the waves, whooping and high fiving. The joy on their faces was pure magic. I can’t even begin to describe the change in them after six weeks.

Or the change in myself. It turned out to be therapy for me too.

So that’s why I’m so passionate about the Wave Project. And why we’re on this crazy mission to raise £22,000 for them.

Because if we can help even just a few more kids feel like that. Help them see just how brave, and capable and amazing they are. Then that is just bloody brilliant.

If you’d like to help too, please do go check out all of the sessions we’ve got at https://kindtide.com/waves-of-kindness/ #/

Some amazing people are offering their support at a fraction of what it would normally cost and every penny will go to the Wave Project to fund their life-changing surf therapy.

And if you don’t want to book a session, but you’d love to help send more kids surfing, then you can donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/waves-of-kindness

“I need to get my marketing sorted but where the fiddlesticks do I start?”

My friend, an extremely talented photographer, wanted to chat to me about establishing their business after they’d moved halfway across the country.

When I thought about it, it’s something I get asked about A LOT. Service providers who have always relied on word of mouth, but after several years of fairly steady business, they feel like they’re kind of ‘running out’ of referrals, or they're just really tired of always being so reactive and want to be able to generate work on their own rather than sitting and waiting for it to appear.

They are ready to get their marketing s**z together once and for all.

Here’s what I told my friend:

Figure out why you’re exceptional at what you do. Why should people hire you over anyone else?
Once you know that, make your website super effective. Show them exactly what you figured out in step 1.
Then optimise all of your places online (social, google listing, directories and so on) to match the messaging and point to your website.
Only then, when you have somewhere to send people, focus on two things…
Build your network. Meet as many people as you can who could either hire you or refer people to you. Online or in person. Get to know them. Help them where you can. Basically, intentionally make friends by being a good human.
Share your work. Show people why you’re awesome. Answer their questions. Be helpful.

In about 9 minutes we managed to come up with a solid plan for their marketing. They feel much happier knowing where to start and what to do next.

If you’re stuck with your marketing or messaging, why not come and have a chat with me.

As part of Waves of Kindness, you can book a 15-minute brand clarity session with me for £22. And all of that money goes to fund surf therapy to help children improve their mental health. A win win for everyone!

Head here to book: https://kindtide.com/waves-of-kindness/ #/

I was going to start this post by saying thank goodness January is finally over, but then I realised I actually quite enjoyed January this year! 🙈

(Isn’t it funny how you hear the same thing over and over and you just kind of start to absorb it as truth? This year I can’t even count how many people have posted or emailed saying it’s felt like it’s day 173/892/1873 of January!)

I mean, yes, I’m properly over the cold and the dark mornings, but actually, January has been pretty fun this year.

Mainly because I’ve spent the best part of it connecting with some super cool folks doing some super cool things to make the world a better place.

So the reason I am so excited that it’s February, isn’t because it’s even closer to spring now (although I am VERY much looking forward to not getting up in the pitch black every day!!) but because today marks the official start of Waves of Kindness!

You might have seen me talking about it over the past few weeks, but in case not, here’s what it’s all about…

1. You can get laser-focussed, expert support for different areas of your life or your business. We've got a dozen experts all donating their time for free.

2. The sessions are all at a really accessible price, and most at a fraction of what you’d normally pay for a session. (Most are a £22 minimum donation, although you can donate more if you want to)

3. The best part is that all the money from the sessions will go directly to the Wave Project – an incredible charity changing the lives of children through surfing.

We’ve got sessions on brand and comms (with me – yay!), sales, copy reviews, personal branding, business strategy, personalised meditations, sustainability workshops, property investing, health and even happiness.

If you’d like to get involved and grab yourself a session or two, head to https://kindtide.com/waves-of-kindness/ #/ to check them all out.

Get 2022 off to a brilliant start AND help change children’s lives through surfing! In January and February 2022, you can get expert support for yourself and for your business AND raise money to help at-risk children build their resilience and confidence. How? With all the stuff that’s been going on the past few years, has fun in your business just had to take a back seat?

(Or is it actually even in the boot, scrumpled under your kid’s bike and 27 bags for life?! Just me?)

I ask because I realised a little while back that my business hadn’t been feeling all that fun.

And I don’t think I’m the only one.

After I’d delivered my course in the summer (which was literally the most fun I’d ever had in my business) I kind of forgot to plan in anything else fun and got dragged back into the head-down-must-make-amazing-new-content treadmill.

And you know what?

In hindsight, not having anything fun planned into my business, was a terrible plan.

Prompted by a podcast from Lizzy Goddard's Online Business Playground, I spent a little time exploring what something fun might look like.

And two things happened.

Firstly, I found something very fun to do in the new year.

Normally I would’ve instantly dismissed such a bonkers idea, but having thought about it from a ‘that could be fun’ point of view, and after a few not-so-subtle nudges from some very wise people, it turns out a) it’s happening, and b) I’m stupidly excited about it. (As well as slightly p**ping my pants, but I think that means it’s a good thing)

The change in my energy has been huge. So much so that people keep commenting on it.

And so the second thing that’s happened, is that’s translated into a ton of cool projects coming my way again. A couple of really exciting collaborations. Some amazing 1-2-1 projects. And a date in the diary for the next round of my the Crystal Clear Brand Immersion course (Starting early March, in case it’s on your radar!)

All that to say, I know I bang on about bringing more kindness into the business world. But also, I think we need to remember the fun too.

If you’ve got a fun thing bubbling away, or something you’d love to do but aren’t sure if you could, sometimes the simple act of telling someone has a funny way of putting the wheels in motion. (And I am 100% here for being that person for you if you'd like me to be 💛)

Clear is kind.

We have to do the hard work and emotional labour to figure out how to communicate what we want to say, and what our people need to hear in a way that's crystal clear.

Being clear is the ultimate act of kindness.

I literally couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks

Can we talk about the ebb and flow of business?

I’ve been pondering lately how, as in life, business tends to ebb and flow.

Sometimes it’s all go, go, go. Lots on, so much excitement, always more to do. Sometimes it’s a little more sleepy. You get to coast more.

And then sometimes, everything gets put on hold when something unexpected comes up (like your baby getting conjunctivitis, refusing to eat anything other than fruit pouches, and then throwing them all back up again so he can't go to childcare and you're back to lockdown-style juggling again 😩)

I don't really have much of a point to this post other than to share my reflection of how although everything is always changing, that there's often a certain rhythm to it all.

How's everything going for you right now? Are you in a crazy period or is life/biz a little more steady right now?

Oh and also, even though p**p has hit the fan in our house, the website workshop is still happening tomorrow. If you need to get your website sorted, you’re very welcome to come. You can find more info at the link in my bio

Want to know the main reason doing a website is such a giant pain in the arse?

I think we come at websites arse about tit (or backwards for any non-brits).

Most people start with design and functionality, instead of starting with strategy.

It’s like picking the bricks for your new house and then just starting to build a wall without any plans.

Which would be madness, right?!

I’ve been planning, writing and building websites for fifteen years. And I’m tired of seeing people hate website projects and it being the thing that holds them back.

We need to get you and your business out in to the world properly so you can start reaching more people and making more of a difference.

So if you really do need to get your website sorted, and you’d like to do it with more than a little of your sanity left intact, this process will help make it much less painful...

1. Strategy - What does your website actually need to do?

2. Structure - How are you going to move people through your site?

3. Plan - What needs to go where and what tools or features will you need to make it all work?

4. Content - Write everything (before you start designing!)

5. Design - What’s it going to look like?

6. Build - Put it all together and make it live!!

At each stage, make sure you check back in with your strategy to keep you on track.

If you’d like to go a bit deeper, conveniently, that’s exactly what I’m going to be teaching in a live workshop next week, complete with access to my super helpful planning spreadsheet (way more fun than it sounds, promise!) and a live Q&A where I can answer your specific website questions.

Until 8pm tonight (that’s Friday 5 November) you can get your seat at the earlybird price of £45. Head to the link in my bio for book.

If you’ve ever had to create a website, or organise a team of people to do it, I imagine you’ve wanted to throw your computer out the window on more than one occasion.

If that’s you right now, or you fear it's about to be, then keep reading…

Because next Tuesday (9th November), I’m running a live training where I’m going to walk you through the exact process I use to help people plan, write and actually publish their websites – without drowning in overwhelm or losing their sanity.

It’s aptly titled…

✨ How to plan your website without drowning in overwhelm or losing your sanity ✨

If that sounds like the sort of thing that is going to make your life immeasurably easier, then head to the link in my bio ) to save your seat now.

I’ve been planning, writing and building websites for nearly fifteen years now. And I’d like to let you in on a secret…

Doing your website doesn’t have to be awful!

I’d like to help you make it waaaay less painful, and so much easier.

And make sure it actually gets done, without you losing your mind.

It's going to be live, jam packed, no-fluff and super-practical.

We’ll cover strategy, structure, planning, content and a tiny bit of design and build (which always comes last by the way).

You’ll walk away with a clear plan and a ton of confidence.

Join us live at midday on Tuesday 9th November on Zoom. And yes, there will absolutely be a replay if you can’t make it live.

Aaaanndd… if you book your spot before 8pm GMT on Friday (5th November) you’ll get a spot for £45, almost half off the regular ticket cost. (After that it goes up to £80)

You’ll find a ton more info in the link in my bio, but of course just shout if you’ve got any questions at all.

SURF LESSON #5
WATCH OUT FOR RIP CURRENTS

A rip current is strong current that runs from the shoreline out to sea.

Rips can be really dangerous. They can drag you out of your depth and out to sea really quickly. Sometimes they can pull you into rocks.

But for surfers, sometimes they're really helpful because they can pull you out behind the waves really quickly... so less paddling and diving under waves to get out back.

Rips are similar to marketing and branding trends.

If you know what you're doing, they can propel you along much faster than normal paddling. But if you're taken by surprise, you can quickly end up somewhere you don't want to be.

Classic example when Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp went down yesterday, the ENTIRE marketing world started firing off random "this is why you've gotta focus on your email list" emails trying to terrify people into buying their services.

Everyone's inboxes got bombarded and any message was totally lost in the sea of people all saying the exact same thing. And now they all look a bit daft.

It's always good to watch a while instead of blindly diving in head first.

Little ripples add up to make big waves.

How does this apply to your brand?

How considered and intentional are the daily actions you take, the experiences you create and the feelings they cause people to feel?

Because these are what will shape your brand.

Not the flashy website, or even the end result.

A brand isn't a thing you can create overnight. It's something you cultivate over time.

How do you feel about your brand? Is it something you're working on daily? Or could you do with making some more ripples?
