Our introduction this evening is men's squad member Joe Hopkins!
Club: Warwick Polocrosse UK
Years Playing: 16
❓ How did you first start playing?
📣 I have been playing polocrosse for about 16 years around my studies after being introduced by my mum Kerry Bean. During that time I have represented the Under 21s with an inbound tour and I also played in Ireland in the Tri Nations in 2009. I was lucky enough to travel to Australia and New Zealand to play the seasons out there after qualifying as a farrier.
❓ What do you love about polocrosse?
📣 I love that polocrosse is a family sport. The game can give you confidence, you get to travel the world, you meet all types of people and make lifetime friends. It is not all about the money you have or don’t have, anyone can play. It is refreshing to know that when you are starting off you can approach senior players to ask for help and advice.
❓ Tell us a bit about your playing horse...
📣 I was over the moon to find my current outstanding horse, Halo, a thoroughbred, 11 year old mare. The reason she is so fantastic is because she has an acceleration second to none, and such a sharpness to her even when changing direction in the instant. A spin that would make you lose your dentures and a stop that can give you whip lash! She is brave mare and has the biggest heart. This is why she is a top horse.
❓ What advice you would give to young players coming into the sport?
📣Practice practice, practice! Do not spend all your time on, say, your stick work. What makes a good player is that they practice everything which includes understanding the game/horsemanship/tactics and being able to reflect on your own performance. Dedication and commitment is also a very large part of being a good all round player. Be able to play all positions also makes for a well rounded, valuable player.
