Jeff Shrimpton, Business & Performance Coach

Jeff Shrimpton, Business & Performance Coach I’m a business coach, but I don’t coach businesses; I coach people.

What most people truly seek isn't just business success; it's to have a full and rich experience of life.

A strong reminder for leaders:

The standards you hold become the standards your team adopts.

If preparation, attention to detail and accountability don’t matter to the leadership team, they eventually stop mattering elsewhere too.

Culture is often created by what leaders consistently tolerate.

That’s why setting the standard matters so much.

A lot of business owners immediately focus on getting more leads when profits are low.

But often the better question is:
“How profitable are we on the work we already do?”

A small improvement in gross margin can have a massive impact on the bottom line.

That’s why good businesses constantly review:
- delivery efficiency
- pricing
- waste
- processes
- profitability per sale

Because scaling an unhealthy business rarely fixes the problem.
It usually magnifies it.

The Law of Diminishing Returns is really important for perfectionists.

At the start of a task, your effort creates huge progress.
But eventually, the curve flattens.
You spend twice the time for tiny improvements

That’s the point where many business owners get stuck.

They keep tweaking:
- graphics
- emails
- presentations
- websites
- systems

…instead of moving onto the next important thing.

Perfection isn’t possible.
Learning when something is “good enough” is a business skill.

Many business owners are what I call “accidental entrepreneurs.”

They started because they were good at something - not because they had a detailed business plan.

The problem is:
even when the business grows, their thinking often stays stuck where it started.

They still:
- underinvest
- underpay themselves
- hesitate to think bigger
- avoid strategic planning

That’s why structure matters.

A good plan turns ideas into ex*****on.
And ex*****on is what grows businesses.

It’s easy to get caught working in the business. But real progress often comes from stepping back and working on it.

A lot of outreach today feels completely automated.

Random pitch messages.
Fake “personalisation.”
Copy-and-paste follow-ups.

People can usually spot it immediately.

If you want better responses, do something more human:
- a short video
- a genuine voice note
- a thoughtful message

Real connection still matters.

A difficult economy can create fear in business owners.

But one of the biggest dangers is believing:
“No one’s spending money.”

Because once you believe that, your behaviour changes:
- you reduce marketing
- stop investing
- become reactive

…and eventually the business slows down.

Strong businesses often use tougher periods to:
- gain market share
- attract better people
- create competitive advantage

Hard times absolutely create challenges.

But they can also create opportunity.

Many businesses have vision and values documents somewhere…

But nobody’s looked at them for years.

The real power comes when those ideas become part of everyday business:
- how people behave
- how decisions are made
- who gets hired
- what standards matter

That’s when culture starts shaping the business properly.

And strong culture is one of the best ways to attract great people.

Most delegation fails because people only delegate part of the process.

“Can you do this bit for me?”
“Can you handle this task?”
“Can you start this?”

But when you only delegate the task… you still own the outcome.

You still:
- oversee it
- chase it
- check it
- finish it

A better approach is to delegate the completed result.

Not:
👉 “Write part of the report.”

But:
👉 “Produce the final report ready to send.”

That shift creates:
- ownership
- accountability
- independent thinking

And ultimately, a business that doesn’t rely on you for every decision.

A useful sales technique…

Instead of asking:
“Do you want to buy?”

Try:
“Does it make sense for us to move to the next stage?”

It removes a huge amount of pressure and turns the conversation into something much more collaborative.

And if the answer is no?

You simply ask:
“What would be the logical next step for you?”

Sometimes small changes in wording completely change the feeling of a sales conversation.
