We’ve been doing some hands-on testing comparing the Ubiquiti 5G MAX and the TP-Link NX510v, and it’s been an interesting contrast in design philosophy.
The Ubiquiti 5G MAX is a compelling 5G backup modem option for existing UniFi environments. It integrates neatly into a UniFi Wi-Fi network, but it’s important to note that it’s not a standalone device — you’ll need a UniFi Gateway, PoE Switch and UniFi Wi-Fi access points for it to function as intended.
On the other hand, the TP-Link NX510v takes an all-in-one approach. It offers Dual WAN support, Ethernet WAN, automatic 5G failover, with a built-in 5G modem, and integrated Wi-Fi, making it a true single-box solution for homes or small businesses that want simplicity and resilience without additional infrastructure.
Both devices have their place — the right choice really comes down to whether you’re extending an existing UniFi stack, or require a more professional Wi-Fi system or looking for a self-contained 5G WAN and failover solution.
As we've all become so reliant on the internet having a back up solution for when there is an outage on the main line is becoming more and more important. So solutions like this are going to become more common.
