My book in Macedonia!!!

On our trip through Macedonia, we stayed at a charming Best Western hotel.

One morning, as I came down for breakfast, I spotted a couple at a nearby table with a copy of my book beside them. Naturally, I had to ask how they came by it.

They smiled and explained a friend back in England recommended it—apparently, they were just launching their own business, and were told it would help them with their relationship and their business. So they had started reading it.

Amazing moment!

“Family Matters, So Does Business. 5 Ways To Keep Your Family & Business Flying.” It was a #1 best seller on Amazon in March 2020.

26 Weeks on the Road: It’s the People Who Make the Journey Unforgettable

After half a year on the road, logging 26 weeks, 182 days, and over 4,368 hours, there’s no one I’d rather have by my side than my best mate and travel partner, Janelle. 262,080 minutes, of me trying to behave myself beside her!!!

With every bend in the road and unexpected stop, it’s become clear that this journey is just as much about the people we meet as the places we explore. Time and again, chance encounters have coloured our days and connected us to the world in ways only travel can.

One thing’s for sure: the universe has a way of arranging these encounters.

Call them God-coincidences or call it divine timing, but we keep bumping into people at just the right moment, from helpful Toyota dealership staff in Hungary, Kiev and Albania, to strangers who quickly become friends.

Take today, for instance. Janelle had popped into the supermarket, and I happened to strike up a conversation with an Italian policeman sitting on a nearby bench. Turns out, he’s a police sergeant, just like I was, and before long, we’re chatting away like old mates, sharing stories of the badge and life on the road. It’s moments like these that remind you how small the world can be. (He didn’t wake us up in our campsite and give us a ticket, like our last encounter with the Italian Police).

And then there’s the hardware store encounter. We’d actually driven past the place, then had that sudden feeling to turn back—just a quick errand, right? But as soon as I told the shop owner I didn’t have cash, he waved it off and gave me the tape I needed for free. )It is a cash only society over here, which we’re quickly understanding). I thanked him by handing over one of our Kiwi keyrings, and you’d think I’d given him a priceless artifact! Out came strong Turkish coffee, water, and endless smiles.

Our Albanian adventures have continued to bring new faces. Up in the Theth mountains, we stopped for a bite after a winding drive along breathtaking cliffs, and a young waiter no older than 20 blew us away with his warmth and knowledge of the area. Another Kiwi keyring passed hands, and we’re fast becoming unofficial ambassadors!

Then, high on the winding Leqet e Hotit Pass, (Albania)we pulled over, only to be joined by an Indian couple in a trusty Range Rover on their own overland journey from the UK to India. Without a word, we all shared a look of recognition—another pair of kindred spirits! Plans were made for a future visit to India, promises exchanged for real Indian meals, and the adventure continued.

As we wound down for the day, a pair of motorcyclists from Kosovo pulled up, offering tips on the best routes through Albania. After sharing a laugh, they roared off toward the sunset, adding to the colourful cast of characters that make this journey memorable.

The day’s final stop was a gem of a restaurant right next to a petrol station—unexpectedly delightful, with three courses for €24 that were as delicious as they were filling. I even ordered a salad. Who’d have thought?

The road has tested us, no doubt—Lake Ohrid in Macedonia was hard to leave behind—but each twist and turn has been more than worthwhile. Albania has captivated us, not just with its landscape but with the warmth and generosity of its people, so far.

It’s these encounters, these people, that truly breathe life into the overland journey.

A Massive Shoutout & Thank You to Toyota Hungary, Toyota Ukraine (Kiev), and Toyota Albania (Tirana)!

As we journey overland, our trusty vehicle has needed some TLC—thanks to my less-than-perfect driving skills and a few off-road mishaps!

The kindness, professionalism, and exceptional customer service we've experienced at Toyota dealerships across Europe have blown us away, and we just had to share.

In Hungary, after I embarrassingly ran the petrol tank dry, the local Toyota dealership inspected the fuel filter, which was making a terrible noise. Their team thoroughly checked for any damage, and when we asked about the cost of labour and parts, they smiled and said, "No charge. Enjoy your trip!" WOW. We were speechless and gifted them a small Kiwi keyring as a token of our appreciation.

In Ukraine (Kiev), we stopped for a routine service—wheel alignment, oil and filter change, and sensor checks. The bill? Just €110! And not only did they service the car, but they also cleaned it and even topped up the petrol. UNBELIEVABLE service!

Then came Tirana, Albania. After a rough patch of off-roading, I managed to tear off the plastic cover protecting the underbody of the car. The sound was horrific as it dragged along behind us, clinging on by just one screw. When I sheepishly explained what had happened, they whisked the car away and in just 20 minutes had reattached the cover. When I asked about payment, once again, they smiled and said, "No charge, have a nice trip!" AMAZING.

All we could offer as thanks was another Kiwi keyring.
Toyota, your dealerships are a shining example of what top-tier customer service looks like, and thanks to them, our car continues to purr like a dream. We're beyond grateful for the care we've received—Toyota, you're keeping our journey smooth and unforgettable!

WHAT AN AMAZING STORY

I am so guilty of judging with knowing the facts, and I am ashamed of myself at times

Judge not, that you be not judged.' Matthew 7:1 NKJV

Pastor Chuck Swindoll was speaking in California: 'A gentleman came to him and said, "I have waited so long for this week, I am going to eat up everything you have to say." Swindoll thanked him. Sunday night...the man started nodding [off].

Swindoll figured that he'd had a long drive and was probably tired. It happened each night until the conference ended. As a preacher...it didn't feel good to see someone sleeping on him.

On Friday morning, the lady who was sitting next to him came to Swindoll and said, "I want to thank you for the ministry this week. Oh, and by the way, I am sorry about my husband sleeping on you...he has terminal cancer and the doctors have just given him a couple of weeks to live.

When we talked about what he wanted to do before he died, he said, 'I want to go hear Chuck Swindoll.' But you see, Dr Swindoll, the doctors gave him medicine to keep away the pain, and the medicine makes him sleep.

I wanted to apologise to you that he has been sleeping, but I wanted you to know you made this the best week of the last part of his life." Swindoll later said he could have crawled under a rock, because he had made a judgement and without any investigation he reacted.'

Wk 25: When is Yogurt not Milk! 5 minute border crossings

5 Minute Border Crossings
It was a day where time seemed to stand still. Entering Croatia from Bosnia, we barely felt the transition—just five minutes at the border! Did they even glance at our passports? The ease with which we crossed was surreal. Before we knew it, we were in Dubrovnik, a gem of the Adriatic.

As we reached the hilltop overlooking Dubrovnik, the city revealed itself like a sparkling jewel, its terracotta roofs glowing under the sun, framed by the deep blue sea. We parked at the top, and then descended by cable car, the city unfolding below us like a painter’s masterpiece, its ancient walls hugging the coastline. The beauty was breathtaking.

Next, we journeyed into Montenegro, a land of stunning contrasts. The landscapes were nothing short of spectacular—vast mountains rising from tranquil lakes, their peaks touching the sky. It’s a poor country, and the weight of its history shows in the faces of the people. They seemed stern, their expressions carrying the stories of hardship. But even in these moments, we found warmth. In the hills, we stumbled upon a little café, and there we met Tommy, a kind soul whose hospitality offered a refreshing contrast to the reserved faces around us.

Montenegro held us in its embrace for a few days before we wound our way over the hills into Kosovo. Ethnic cleansing still lingers in the air here, the memories of 1999 palpable, but Pristina is a city that has risen from the ashes. Modern and lively, it gave us a sense of hope. The highlight was the simple act of mailing a package home to Louisa. The postal worker was an absolute delight—so warm and full of life, in contrast to the heavy history this country has endured.

With Kosovo behind us, we headed south to North Macedonia. Skopje welcomed us with its iconic Millennium Cross standing tall against the sky, a symbol of resilience. But it was Lake Ohrid that stole our hearts. Imagine standing on a hill, the lake below glimmering like a silver mirror, surrounded by lush greenery and distant mountains. The serenity was almost otherworldly. We knew we had to stay a few days, just to soak it all in.

When Yoghurt is not Milk
We headed to the local supermarket, ready to stock up on essentials again. Unable to speak the language, we grabbed two big bottles, thinking they were milk. To our surprise, they turned out to be yogurt! We had a good laugh over the mix-up. But you know what? The yogurt is actually really tasty!

Each place offered something different, and each border crossing, whether a simple five-minute ordeal or a gateway to another world, was an invitation to witness history, beauty, and humanity in all its forms. It’s moments like these that make this journey unforgettable.

From Croatia's coastlines to Montenegro's mountains, Kosovo's history, and North Macedonia's lakes, the road is being our greatest teacher.

Wk 24: Flood warning, Transfăgărășan Pass, No possibility of postage.

We were nestled by the serene Trouts River in Romania, the cool night air wrapping around us, when suddenly, at exactly 2:27 a.m., the phone shrieked with two blood-curdling rings. Jolted awake for a moment, we groggily drifted back to sleep, thinking nothing of it.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1STy8U2DizFNmvZq534z-B2MPEDgbIHTH/view?usp=drive_link

Only in the soft glow of dawn did we discover the alarming truth—it was a flood warning! Leaping up, we scrambled to check the river. The water had risen ominously, but fortune smiled on us; it hadn’t yet reached our camp. The river whispered its power, but we remained untouched, if only just.

Later that morning, eager to continue our adventure, we decided to take what we thought was a “shortcut” back to the main highway. However, when we arrived at the bridge, a sinking realisation hit us—20 feet of it had been swept away by the floods!

Forced to backtrack 14 kilometres through winding roads, it was a humbling reminder that nature had her own plans for us.

It seemed like storms have decided to be our constant travel companions. As we neared Brașov, Romania, the heavens opened in a torrential downpour. Rain bucketed down so fiercely that camping under the stars became impossible. But our impromptu decision to take shelter in an apartment was perfect—a warm, cozy reprieve from the storm’s rage.

Brașov itself was nothing short of a fairy tale. Its beauty took our breath away—the architecture, an unexpected blend of medieval charm and grand, elegant designs, stood in stark contrast to what you might imagine of Soviet-era buildings. The town had a captivating allure that made it hard to leave. While there, we picked up three delicately hand-painted Romanian eggs—miniature works of art, each more beautiful than the last.

The following day brought another highlight of the trip—the legendary Transfăgărășan Pass. Described as one of the most beautiful roads in the world by Top Gear, the reality surpassed even the wildest expectations. Winding through the majestic Carpathians, each turn revealed jaw-dropping views that left us speechless.

Words like "breathtaking" and "stunning" somehow didn’t do it justice—it was a symphony of nature’s finest, with snow-dusted peaks, lush valleys, and crisp mountain air that seemed to sing of freedom.

To capture this magic, we tested out our new Insta360 camera and attachment. Wow—what a game-changer! We filmed every curve of the road, in 360*, the vivid colours of the landscape, and even controlled the camera from within the car. This was video footage that will last a lifetime.

That night, we camped at the foot of the mountains, but the temperature dropped to a brisk 4°C. It was the first truly cold night of the trip, and even with hats and jackets on, we felt winter’s touch.

It was clear—it was time to start heading south.

The next morning, we tackled the Transalpina Pass. Compared to the Transfăgărășan, it felt rather underwhelming, leaving us with unexpected time on our hands.

So, what do you do when plans change?

A series of small, amusing adventures, of course.

First, we tried to post a parcel to Louisa in New Zealand, only to find Romania only ships to EU countries—so much for that idea.

Next, we explored an incredible store called ‘Dedeman’. Imagine a shop that has everything you never knew you needed.

We left with:

a new headlight (mine had broken),
a thick blanket to fight off the cold creeping up from the ground beneath our airbed,
and five LED strip lights to finally illuminate our camp at night.
Seriously, why hadn’t we thought of that sooner?
Oh, and petrol—just €1.14 per litre! We couldn’t stop smiling at that.

Little wins make the journey all the more satisfying.
