Is Employee Sickness Absence making you ill?

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revised its estimates of the UK labour market showing that it has a bigger workforce, with employment up 170,000 compared to previous estimates.

However, it has also highlighted that the number of people not working due to long-term sickness is up from its previous record high of 2.6 million to 2.8 million.

Here are some tips to handling long term sickness:

👉️ Have a clear sickness absence policy

👉️ Consider whether Flexible working would help

👉️ If you have an Occupational Health contract, refer your employee

👉️ Understand how to go through a Capability process to manage high absence properly

1️⃣ Communication: Important for EVERYONE. But particularly for HR professionals who are responsible for managing people and resolving conflicts.

2️⃣ Emotional intelligence: This leaves you better equipped to understand and manage your own emotions and those of your colleagues, fostering a more positive and productive work environment.

I can completely relate.

When I first saw what Chat GPT can do, I just about spilt my coffee all over my keyboard.

Have you ever lost a loved one? 💭 It's tough, REALLY tough, and my heart goes out to anyone who has lost someone close to them. ❤️

Grieving takes time, energy and can totally consume your life, and your employer should know that, whether or not they've lost someone close to them or not.

So, an employee reaches out and told you their loss, what do you do?

Panic? No.

Provide advice? Probably not the best time...

Make sure they have the time and materials they need to recover from this heartbreaking event? YES. 🙌🏼

You should...

1. Be sensitive to what each person might need at the time

2. Consider the person's physical and emotional wellbeing, including once they've returned to work

3. Recognise that grief is not a linear process and affects everyone differently – there is no right or wrong way to grieve and it can affect people at different times following a death

Does your business have a Bereavement Policy? If the answer is no, it's important to look into this as soon as possible, as unfortunately, it's something you may have to deal with in the future. 💛
