Frank Abagnale Jr., the real-life inspiration for Catch Me If You Can, once posed as a doctor—and surprisingly became known as an excellent intern supervisor. His secret wasn’t knowledge. It was curiosity. Instead of giving orders, he asked interns what they would do. When someone hesitated, he asked others to challenge or explain. The team learned by thinking, not by being told.
I recently saw a parallel in an IT project. A newly promoted senior developer kept diving into every bug like a lifeguard—fixing what he saw and assuming the problem was solved. But heroics often made things worse. His real job isn’t to understand every line of code; it’s to guide developers, set standards, and coach them through their own work.
Many new managers believe they must be the expert. In reality, they must grow experts.
The lesson: you don’t need to know everything to lead. You just need to ask, listen, and create space for others to think. If you want to learn how to develop your team, I can help.
