Happy Twixmas, that odd week were most of us business owners turn to our planning, whether it be journaling our intentions, resetting mindsets for resilience or full scale strategy completion.
Strategy is important and I would encourage you all to use this week to invest some time into your planning.
However . . . poke incoming . . . In my opinion strategies fail mainly down to 3 things;
1. Compiled in isolation, if you have a team it should be a team approach, for solo-entrepreneurs its important to have a critical friend. Very often, the year's plan is done in isolation too, you need to go back a year and review your goals and gaps, both downsides and upsides and make sure the learning underpins this years strategy, you also need to look ahead, at least 3 years to ensure this year keeps you on the right path.
2. Not reconciled, your strategy needs to be tested for feasibility, not just against your impact goal but against your resources to deliver, does your downside cover your basic earnings needs and do you have the additional resources for the stretch/upside to achieve your best earning goal, in fact is your basic/better/best income model fully costed and priced?
3. Look beyond your strategy, a strategy can remain a statement of intention if it isn't converted into an operational plan, most at best will drill down the year into quarters but with out an operational plan, reflective of seasons and working patterns, knowing the normal peaks and trough in our business, understanding what needs to be achieved month by month with measurements and contingencies in place, well your strategy will just set you up for failure and regret, the operational planning will test your resilience and mindset and allow for you to create the time both in and on your business as well as the much needed leadership development for yourself personally.
Converting your strategy into a coherent operational plan shouldn't feel like pushing a tractor up a hill!
This is why I will be holding group half day sessions during January, to help you complete the much need task of reconciling your strategy, along side a critical friend whilst producing your operational plan.
