Kurt Buchwald's work offers views of azure seas, cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation. The disruptive thing about these photographs is that almost the entire picture space is filled by a red rectangle. Like a stop sign, it blocks the view of this natural beauty, deflecting our line of vision so that we have to reconstruct it from our own imaginings of the place.

Since the mid 1980s, the action artist from East Berlin has promoted interference to a photographic principle. For the series 'Ghost images and colour screens', he was already inserting plates in front of the lens to partially concealed image.

Buchwald's disrupted images spring from media critique. They can be read as a reaction to today's visual overload and as a challenge to claim that this medium conveys reality or truth.
