What would it take for you to be truly happy in your work?

Grab a piece of paper and a pen and let yourself answer the question.

Leaders need to feel like they are making a difference with and for people they wish to stand alongside; in pursuit of a cause they believe in.

In my experience very few leaders I meet have made a solid statement of what they really want, why they want it or are taking truly deliberate action to get it.

That doesnt have to be you.

I love this quote.

“It is never too late
to be what you might have been”

It reminds me that life is about choice(s).

We often think we don't have them, but we usually do.

A choice to stay, a choice to go, a choice to our minds. A choice to , a choice to follow, a choice to become in time.

Your future self; really could start today.

Here are 3 questions to consider this week:

1. What small step could you take towards being who you really are?
2. Who inspires you to take that step?
3. Who could you tell when you have?

Lead from where you are.

I posted this 👇 on my LinkedIn profile today and thought of you should post it here today too.

You might feel 'lost' today by a certain appointment.

Don't feel lost. Respond.

Respond by being the change you wish to see.

Think of others.

Advocate for others.

Act for others.

Lift others up.

Educate others.

Strive for equity and inclusion for all.

Make business about doing good.

Call out bad behaviours.

Lean into challenge and change.

Lead from where you are.

And if you are unsure how to do that. Get in touch; cos that's my purpose - helping good people lead great things.

Changing this; is a great thing.

I launched my 1st newsletter last night on Linkedin and I've already had a couple of lovely pieces of feedback:

"It is leading you to a new beginning".

Today is a big day.

My guidance to my own children if they could vote today?

Make your choice based out of hope, not fear.

Make your choice out of what's best for most not just those you hold dear.

Make your choice out of what's just, rather than what comes with ease.

Make your choice for tomorrow not based upon what comes quickly and is made to appease.

Vote.

Whom have I worked with?

As a potential coachee, its important that you know whom I have worked with and s sense of my experience, my moral compass and my 'playing space'.

Over the past 25 years I have been blessed to work with some amazing organisations both as an employee, a contractor and as a coach and facilitator.

I've led for Nationwide Building Society, architected and delivered change for NFU Mutual and my final corporate leadership role was for Santander

I've also consulted and coached in the Public, Private and Charitable Sectors too.

The common thread in all of those engagements has been working with passionate people, who wanted to do good things for a wider good.

I have had some of the finest bosses you could ask for, the most determined teams you could wish for and ambitious sponsors you could seek; but don't be under any illusions that it's been easy.

I have had to convince people to deliver changes that were needed but not initially wanted, I have worked with coachees who didn't want to change and were 'asked' to work with me and I have delivered change that should have taken 5-7 years in 2.

I have also founded, managed and barista'd in my own award winning coffee house on the Isle of Wight and opened my own successful art gallery.

Why tell you this?

Author Jana Oliver said that "A soul is forged in the fires of adversity, not comfort" and I believe that it is this mix of challenge and support in which I've 'grown up' which enables me to support my coachees, not matter the context, in business and in life.

As a leader, I can bring answers; but as a coach, I'm much more interested in yours - drawn out through questions informed by my experience but not guided by it.

What environment do you need to succeed in?

As long as you are a good person wanting to lead great things - I've 'got your back'.

I love the Scaling method…

Such a great tool for helping someone to work out where they are in relation to their ideal and what has got them to where they are.

I continue to love using it, 24 years into my coaching journey, a way of unlocking someones level of esteem in the process, raised awareness of how far they have come and to see if they know what they do that brings them success (even partial) that they have already seen.

On paper its a simple process; framing a question with a scale. e.g. On a scale of 0 -10 with 10 being high; how happy are you with where you are right now?

In my experience...

A coach helps you work out where you are.

A great coach helps you to work out if you really want to move one further along the line and helps you create strategies which help you take multiple steps.

One step further.

In my coaching practice, I also use a form of 'scaling' based upon words to describe scenarios, feelings and emotions.

One client, for example, described a situation juggling 3 organisations as being 'on fire'. Recognising that they needed to turn down the heat, I asked them "If you are currently at a 10, what word would you use to describe the 'next level of heat' down?

It helped create breakthrough for that senior leader and strategies for reducing stress to a manageable point such that we could strategise some significant organisational and structural changes.

Scaling works brilliantly when asking teams to assess their progress too.
