A reflection moment!

✨️ It has been a long time, since I have posted anything worth posting.
But this week deserves some recognition.

👩‍💼 As an interpreter, whilst I help the communication between the professionals and the patients, l end up wearing a lot of hats.

Depending on the appointments, beside using my linguistic and interpersonal communication skills to help all parties to understand each other and communicate accurately, l also use my personal skills. As a result of this I then become:

🔶️ A comforting mother to a little child, when nurses are taking blood to test genetic mutation diseases,
🔷️ A trusted friend when a mother is talking about the domestic violence she has been receiving in her house, where she should be safe,
🔶️ A sister when a cancer patient is taken for MRI scanning to find out whether the treatment she received has worked or not,
🔷️ A trusted friend to a patient who is suffering from PTSD because of their traumatic experiences they had.

The list goes on...

This week was one of those l have interpreted for people like above and more. To hear a genuine "Thank you" from them means very humbling, indeed.

So, another productive week 🙏

Wishing everyone a beautiful, colourful 2025! 🌸🍀☘️🌹💐🌺🌻🌿🌹❤️

How do you keep your cool as an interpreter when the patients are given upsetting news by the consultants?

🔸️ Being a medical interpreter is very humbling. Because as interpreters we become a big part of the patients' journey during the hospital appointments, especially when they need countless tests, investigations, scans and treatments for the illness they are going through.

🔹️ It feels amazing for example when a cancer patient receives good news regarding to the treatment they receive. We join their happiness and celebrate with them.

🔸️ But there is the other side of the coin. It gets though when they receive bad news as the last treatment may have not worked as well as it was expected. The patient then naturally feels down and very upset.

It is very difficult for us not to get upset for/with them, and it would be unhuman not to, yet we have to be very professional and don't show our emotions. We need to keep our cool and more emphasise to the treatment options the professionals are yet to plan.

This week it was not easy to interpret the bad news to a patient, for whom I have been translating over 2 years.

Being positive is the key as there are alternative treatment options.

ITI WRG's Annual Members' Day Part 2

Being a freelance translator or interpreter can sometimes feel like a lonely profession, so in-person networking events are really important and incredibly worthwhile.

The ITI WRG held its annual Members' Day on Saturday in Bristol, with a CPD session on mindfulness in the morning (see previous post 🙂). We kicked off the afternoon with some member updates from our coordinator Becca George, followed by fun language-based quizzes and networking.

Stephanie Martinez-Hill put together an excellent idioms quiz with contributions in a whole host of languages from our members, and Gill Barringer's fun language balderdash quiz was back by popular demand!

At the end of the day we headed back down to the Canteen for a drink and to carry on chatting.

ITI WRG's Annual Members' Day Part 1

This year our Members' Day took place in Hamilton House’s Mild West Room, last Saturday, looking out onto Banksy’s 1999 Mild Mild West mural. 🎨

We started with a mindfulness session led by Claire Moreau in the morning.

Claire introduced us to the key concepts of mindfulness and equipped us with some effective techniques. 🧘‍♀️
We learnt about breathwork, tuning in and tuning out.

As translators and interpreters, we wear many hats at the same time, and our work can be intense.
✅ We shared some of the positive emotions we experience in our day-to-day work, such as satisfaction, pride and enjoyment.
❌ But we also explored the negative ones: stress, anxiety, the fear of not being good enough and the inability to switch off or detach ourselves from upsetting content.

🗨
Claire guided us through three meditations and we learnt how to approach meditation as a beginner and that there is no one way, as everyone is different.

Feeling very relaxed, we all headed downstairs for lunch in the Canteen to refuel before an afternoon of quizzes and networking. Stay tuned for more about this in Part 2

It was a very good gathering! Also it was great to put new faces to names.

Looking forward to seeing you all again and maybe more of you in another WRG meet-up.

Yesterday 13 ITI WRG members gathered together for a Sunday lunch at The Fountain Inn in Wells.

The pub was lovely, the food excellent, and everyone had a great time! 😋

We'll be organising more Sunday lunch socials in the local area in the near future... watch this space!
