Asian ceramics specialist Andrew Huyan introduces lot 78; a very rare late Ming beaker…

“I’ve always thought antique objects have their own journey before coming to us. Today, I want to show you this remarkable late Ming blue and white cup, dating to around 1640, from our 18 May sale, Lot 78.

Although it’s a very small cup, it has an extraordinary history. It came from the famous Hatcher Cargo, and was later sold at Christie’s Amsterdam in 1984.

What makes this cup special is its decoration. Among all the recovered examples from the cargo, this was the only cup painted with a scene of lovers kissing — an incredibly rare and unusual subject for late Ming porcelain.

The cup was later published in The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes: The Complete Record, where it was noted that only three cups of this type were included in the entire cargo.

This cup had great provenance and also passed through several important collections, including John and Julia Curtis, and later in the renowned dealer Marchant collection.

After centuries beneath the South China Sea, the cup still survives in good condition, carrying with it a remarkable story across oceans, collections, and time. And now, back onto the market and it begins another new chapter in its journey.

I think it is a rare opportunity for collectors not only to appreciate this remarkable piece, but also to become part of its continuing journey.
Thank you! “

Andrew Huyan

Lot 78 is part of the ‘Moving to Brook Street’ section of the sale, which is offered without reserve
