Our Autumn series of sales began strongly with particular highlights in the painting and artworks category in Friday’s Autumn Interiors sale.

There was strong international interest in the signed Warhol screen print, with telephone and internet bidders helping it to achieve a price of £55,608.

It was a great day for pictures all around, with well known artists like Laura Knight, Victor Pasmore, Fred Yates, John Hoyland, Rufus Ogundele, Mick Cawston and Alan Furneaux achieving strong results and wonderful works by lesser known artists like Evelyn Harris finding new admirers.

We are already consigning artworks for our December Interiors auction and would love to appraise any pieces that you may be thinking of selling.

We are thrilled to offer works by pioneers of Nigerian Modernism, Rufus Ogundele (1946 - 1996) and Twins Seven-Seven (1944-2011), in our 9 October sale.

Born Omoba Taiwo Olaniyi Oyewale-Toyeje Oyelale Osuntoki in Ogidi, Kogi State, Nigeria, Twins adopted the name “Twins Seven-Seven” as the sole surviving child out of seven sets of twins born to his mother.

Raised in a deeply traditional Yoruba environment, Twins initially pursued performance as an itinerant dancer, musician, and actor before joining Duro Ladipo’s theater troupe in Oshogbo during the early 1960s. In 1964, he attended the famous experimental workshops run by Ulli Beier and Georgina Beier. With no formal Western art training, he developed a highly distinct visual language drawing from Yoruba folklore, spiritualism, and personal cosmology.

Rufus Ogundele also participated in the pioneering Oshogbo workshops in the early 1960’s, where he embraced painting and printmaking, particularly learning linocut techniques under Georgina Beier. Stylistically, his work is known for its large scale, bold black outlines, and vibrant color palette. While trained in a modernist framework, his art is deeply rooted in his devotion to Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron, creating a powerful fusion of spiritual fervor and dynamic movement.

On October 1st we will be visiting the village of Steeple Ashton as they host a charity valuation event to raise much needed funds for the Steeple Ashton Recreation & Community Development Group. 

Hopping over the county border, 3 of our specialist team, Antique Roadshow regulars, Lee Young, Lisa Lloyd and Marc Allum, will conduct valuations for this ‘mini Antiques Roadshow’ style event. Their expertise ranges (but is not limited to) fine jewellery, porcelain, ceramics, watches, militaria, Chinese and Japanese art and rare collectables. All items will be seen!

Lee Young, comments: “It’s not uncommon for charity events like this to bring unexpected surprises; whether that’s finding out something new about a family heirloom passed down through generations, or the discovery that an item bought in a charity shop is worth a significant sum at auction.”

Penny Hornsey, Events Fund Raiser comments:  “We are so excited to welcome familiar faces from the BBC show, there is much anticipation in the village. We hope people will come and make a real day of it.”

The raised funds will continue transforming the former, somewhat tired Football and Playing Field into a vibrant area to suit villagers of all generations. Coming this year: Outdoor table tennis table; ground level trampoline; willow maze. Looking ahead: Cycle pump track; zip wire; children’s play equipment.

Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American movie star, was born in LA on January 3rd 1905, to laundryman Wong Sam Sing and his wife, Lee Gon Toy.

From an early age she was entranced by film and regularly attended the neighbourhood nickelodeons.

Anna became determined to become an actress, much to her father’s disappointment, and in spite of the overwhelming amount of racism towards her in 1930s Hollywood.

Against these odds she carved out a successful career, though was often limited to supporting roles and she expressed disappointment at being typecast as an exotic foreign vamp, or ‘dragon lady’ baddie.

Anna’s greatest role in Hollywood was in support of Marlene Dietrich in Josef von Sternberg’s Oscar-winning classic Shanghai Express (1932).

Due to the taboo of miscegenation, which was in some states actually illegal, she rarely got romantic leading roles as it would have been considered scandalous for her to share an on-screen kiss with a Caucasian actor. Because of this she often lost out on parts to Caucasian actresses.

One exception to this was Java Head, which was filmed in Bristol in 1934 and follows the fortunes of a wealthy shipping family. It was the only film of Wong’s where she was able to share a kiss with the male lead and as a result, was one of her favourite parts.

Anna loved to read, drink, smoke and play golf. She sadly died of a heart attack in 1961 when she was just 56.

Despite the limitations placed upon her acting career, she is now widely considered to be a trailblazing and iconic figure in the history of cinema 🎬

Provenance: Gifted to the illustrator and costume designer Ronald Egerton Balfour (1896–1941). In 1934 Balfour was appointed as the Art Director of Fox British Productions at Wembley and designed costumes for Anna May Wong in the 1934 Bristol-set historical drama film “Java Head”.
