Our next auction, Forgotten Treasures, consists of the selected contents of a Kensington Gallery including good European porcelains, Japanese and Chinese ceramics, paintings and works of art, both Asian and European alike. The family run antique gallery is closing down after forty years of business and the auction consists of items from storage and the gallery, with many pieces not having been on the market for 30 or 40 years.

Alexandra studied gemology at the Gemological Institute of America and completed the Graduate Gemological programme in 2013. She went on to work in the jewellery department of Dreweatts for the next 7 years, then as a specialist consultant for various auction houses. Alex has been fortunate enough to handle, catalogue and value individual pieces and collections from across the jewellery world and she brings this experience in the myriad areas of maker, period and style to her role at Dore & Rees.

It’s lovely when an object finds its way home after three hundred years. This bronze crotal bell is heading back to Aldbourne in Wiltshire, where it was originally cast by Robert Corr in the late 17th Century.

Thanks to John Dymond at it will be going on view at Aldbourne Heritage Centre for all to see.

Crotal bells, also known as rumble bells, were used on horse drawn vehicles to warn other road users that another vehicle was approaching. They were often thought to be lucky and could warn off evil spirits.

A LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY BRONZE WILTSHIRE CROTAL BELL
of globular form with incised decoration, bears the initial R.C. probably for the maker either Robert Corr I (1690-1715) or Robert Corr II (1720-1724) of Aldbourne

Note: This Crotal Bell was found during renovations to a part 16th Century/part 17th Century cottage in Wiltshire which had been derelict for a long time. It was found buried low down in the back wall of the 17th Century part which was demolished in 2001. The wall was constructed of mainly rubble. There was no evidence that the wall had been disturbed since it had been built. It is thought that it could have been put into the wall to ward off evil spirits.

This May, the Oriental Ceramic Society, with the help of , invited OCS members for a handling session inside the house of collector Anthony Lovett, known for his important Transitional and early Kangxi porcelain collection which he has amassed over several years.

A unique opportunity indeed and one that was greatly enjoyed by participants who spent the day exploring Anthony’s collection and learning about the history, craftsmanship, and curation that goes into a unique collection of this kind.
