Legendary maker Heuer, synonymous with racetrack time keeping, headlines the fine watches going under the hammer at Wilton House this weekend.

Founded in 1850 by Edouard Heuer, this iconic Swiss watchmaker became popular amongst the motor racing community from the 1950s to the 1970s. Heuer was a leading producer of stopwatches and time keeping apparatus so it was only a matter of time before drivers, their crews and event sponsors began to wear Heuer chronographs.

Dore & Rees have a very fine selection of Heuer wristwatches, stopwatches and accessories to choose from.

Come and view at Concours des Légendes in the Opulent Objects room, just inside the entrance to the Riding School.

You’ll find all the lots up for auction, from watches and fine jewellery, to automobilia and classic motoring, from the team

Featured:
Lot 81 - AN EXTREMELY RARE ANGLO-NORMAN PARCEL GILT SILVER CENSER PINNACLE, C.1150
A lost wax cast four sided detachable cover for an ecclesiastical censer, with open-work or pierced ornamentation. The square base has four circular lugs to secure the pinnacle to the body of a larger censer base. The four sides are decorated with birds, mythical beasts and foliage beneath triangular gables, at the junctions of the gables are serpent or animal form heads. The ‘roof’ is comprised of four lozenge form sections decorated with winged beasts, the roof surmounted by a tripartite finial. The censer pinnacle fits into a small group of similar cast bronze examples held at the British Museum. The closest comparison being the damaged pinnacle found in the Thames near London Bridge, illustrated in ‘The History of English Plate’ by C.J. Jackson pp 87-90.
The overall form of decoration appears to resemble the style of the Herefordshire School of Romanesque Sculpture both in the zoomorphic depictions and the representation of foliage, most closely the carved foliage and animal figures on the south door of the Kilpeck Church of St. Mary and St. David.
(8.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm)
The censer cover comes with an annotated piece of paper, which reads: ‘Dug up in the field below the Old Oak by Labourer’s Wife, 1860’

NOTE: A similar censer cover can be found in the British Museum collection (Item no. 1960,0701.1)

Here we take a close-up view of lot 258 from the Fine Jewellery, Watches & Opulent Objects auction: The Heuer Steel Autavia Chronograph Wristwatch Ref: 2446H ‘The Rindt’.

Jochen Rindt was arguably the greatest Formula 1 talent of his generation. Born in 1942 he came up through the racing ranks, joining Formula 1 in 1964, winning his first Formula 1 race in 1969. He and his wife, the model Nina Rindt, were well known figures both on and off the circuit. He wore his Heuer 2446 on the track. Rindt was tragically killed, aged only 28, racing for Lotus at Monza in 1970. He is still the only Formula 1 driver to have won the World Championship posthumously.
