On Friday 28th August, after an incredible 48 years in the sign industry, we will say a very fond farewell to Rob Hogarth as he begins his retirement.

Rob has spent the last 9½ years with us at Jonsigns, and during that time he has become far more than simply a member of the team. His knowledge, experience and understanding of the sign industry have been invaluable to both me personally and to the business.

When you stop and think about 48 years in this industry, it’s quite an achievement. Rob has seen enormous changes — from the traditional methods of signmaking through to the digital printing, CNC machinery, LEDs and technology that we work with today. There
probably isn’t much in the sign industry that Rob hasn’t seen, priced, specified or had an opinion on over the years!

But experience like Rob’s isn’t something you can learn from a manual. It’s accumulated over decades of solving problems, dealing with customers, learning what works — and occasionally learning what doesn’t.

I’ve genuinely enjoyed working alongside Rob over the last 9½ years. We’ve had plenty of laughs, probably a few disagreements along the way, and certainly plenty of stories, but I’ve always had enormous respect for his knowledge and the contribution he’s made
to Jonsigns.

It’s sad to see him leave us and particularly to see such a huge amount of experience leaving the industry at the same time.

48 years is one hell of an innings, Rob. You’ve certainly earned your retirement.

On behalf of myself and everyone at Jonsigns, thank you for everything you’ve done for the company. We wish you and your family nothing but happiness for the future and hope you enjoy having a little more time to yourself.

Although knowing Rob, I suspect retirement won’t stop him telling us how we should have priced a job!

All the very best, Rob — and thank you.

Today marks 30 years of Jonsigns.

I started this business in 1996, aged 21, working out of my mum and dad’s house on Fellside Road in Whickham. No factory, no team — just graft and a belief it could work.

30 years on, we’re a 38-strong team working from a 55,000 sq ft facility in Gateshead, designing, manufacturing, and installing signage across the UK for clients including Farmfoods, Papa John’s, William Hill and Ralph Lauren, alongside multinational brands nationwide.

It’s been thoroughly enjoyable — and stressful in equal measure. A couple of recessions, COVID, more ups and downs than I can count. To anyone who ever doubted it could be done: this is what hard work, blood, sweat and tears gets you

Along the way we’ve grown into the JS Group — Jonsigns, HJC Specialist Coatings (named after my two oldest boys Harrison & Joseph) and Trade Signs, three companies now running under one roof. And there’s more to come.

Very proud that my boys are interested in taking over the company one day, and that they already work for me with the same hard work and effort I’ve always put in.

None of this happens without my mum and dad, who believed in me and helped me set the business up, and stuck by me through thick and thin. This one’s for my late mum, and for my dad, who’s still by my side.

Here’s to another 30-plus years of Jonsigns — getting bigger and better all the time.
