Super Happy with these bespoke display kitchen units! Made as an add on for Sangeeta’s kitchen that we installed last year. All the original kitchen is IKEA base units and wall cabinets. We laid the orange floor and the contrast with the natural timber is wonderful (All Sangeeta’s design work!) The display units are made from 18mm Maple plywood.

I can’t take Gateshead with me everywhere I go. But I can take a bit of it.

This fantastic piece is by Gateshead based artist Bernard Quinn. His paintings are bold, colourful and unmistakably rooted in our town — its buildings, its industry and its character.

When I got a ministerial office in the Cabinet Office, I knew I wanted Gateshead on the walls. So I bought this one — with my own money, before anyone starts. It shows part of Gateshead High Street - can you tell where it is?

I’ve also got a painting of Whickham by another artist which I love, and a few other pieces from our community around the office. More on those another day.

I said I’d be a voice for Gateshead in every room I’m in.

So when ministers, civil servants and visitors come through my door in Whitehall, they’ll see Gateshead too.

A little bit of home, right in the heart of government.

Spent some time with Vikas today talking about GemArts and the incredible work they do in Gateshead, across Tyneside and right across the North East.

Vikas has dedicated decades to building something that gives people a chance to see their culture, their stories and their creativity reflected in the place they call home. Since 2001, GemArts has been a vital part of the cultural life of our region, from the Masala Festival to work with artists, schools and communities.

I particularly enjoyed seeing Playback / Rewind: South Asian Sound & Memory in the gallery at Gateshead Central Library. It uses music, photographs, records and memories to tell the story of South Asian communities in Gateshead — and the part they have played in shaping our town.

It’s a celebration of the South Asian community’s contribution to Gateshead — and of the generations of people who have made this town their home, built businesses, raised families, created culture and strengthened our communities.

They have helped make Gateshead the place it is today.
