Haven’t been to the plot for more than a week, so popped over there to turn the compost heaps. To speed the process up , you to regularly turn the heap to add oxygen for all the little microbes. It’s also important to cover, so that you can keep it warm and control the moisture levels.

Also great to see the onions have started sprouting 🧅🧅🧅

Haven’t been to the allotment for a while, but the sun was out so went to work on the soft fruit area. Planted out a red gooseberry and a raspberry that we grew in our garden last year. Going to get 3 more raspberries, so also set out a new bed for them. Finally, mulched all the plants with bark chip to help suppress the weeds around their base.

We have decided to keep this blackberry bush, as not only do the kids love them but it’ll act as a great screen to the compost area. So we had to remove the old stems and tie in the young stems along the frame. Sadly it hasn’t been pruned for a while so there’s only a few young stems that’ll produce fruit next summer. But it should produce many more stems in the spring that we can tie in for the following summer.

Very satisfied to have finished clearing the last overgrown section of the plot. After removing brambles and nettles, we discovered currents, gooseberries and even potentially a blueberry. Clearing the area means we can finish creating our compost bins, whilst creating space for some fruit shrubs. Any suggestions?

The onion sets are in thanks largely to my little helper (though he was very tired after rugby 🏉)

I’ve fleeced a section of the bed as a little experiment to see what difference that makes to their growing.

But it’s so satisfying to have a bed planted up just a month after taking over the plot.

Hi everyone,

In case you don’t know, We’ve got myself an allotment over at Bloors lane and have setup an Instagram account charting our progress as we turn a disused plot into producing lots of fruit and veg.
