*******FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE********
I’ve written before about the pitfalls of buying off Facebook, I was recently called to look at a 2 year old Hotpoint washing machine, that was bought off a Facebook marketplace page for £180. It was probably the worst appliance l’ve ever seen sold, it looked clean and tidy on the outside, but mechanically it had literally been run into the ground! The basic fault reported, was that it banged on spin and then tripped the electrics. All the other faults didn’t stop it working, but many would in the near future, if the tub hadn’t failed.
On inspection I found:
1. The machine was a WM63 and I believe Hotpoint discontinued making this model about the year 2000, but no later than 2005, so definitely not 2 years old!
2. The bearing housing in the tub had broken loose (common fault when these machines get old), causing excessive movement of the drum, hence the banging. (Tub. This product is no longer available).
3. The heater element was damaged by the drum, causing it to short to earth, tripping the electrics. (Genuine Element. This product is a special order. ₤62.76).
4. Bearings, very loud and would need replacing. (Bearing and shaft kit. £69.94 in stock).
5. The pump was leaking, the pump fitted was from a much earlier machine, pump dated 1984. (Genuine Pump. This product is no longer available).
6. Motor, dead short to earth, but had the earth wire removed, so wouldn’t trip the electrics. (Motor. £147.46 in stock)
7. Motor brushes, nearly worn out and in copy black holders, the machine should have brushes in white holders. Hotpoint stopped fitting brushes in black holders to their machines in the early 1990’s. (brushes would come with new motor).
8. Rear top spring broken. (Spring. £10.93 in stock).
9. Door seal, poor quality copy and hole worn at top, caused by the broken rear top spring. (Genuine Seal. £50.26 in stock)
10. Suspension, completely gone, more bounce than Zebedee. (Suspension kit. No longer available, individual parts that are available. £175.12, this does not include the top and bottom rubber bushes, that would be required to do the repair correctly).
11. Cabinet cracked in the area of the suspension mounts. (Strengthening bar. no longer available).
12. Door lock, technically there wasn’t one, the electrical part had failed and been bypassed, the door could be opened at time during the wash or spin and it would still operate. (Genuine Door lock. This product is a special order ₤55.26)
13. Timer, blown track on PCB, due to the door lock failure. (Timer. This product is no longer available).
As not all the parts to complete this job and make it “SAFE” are available, the machine is unrepairable. If the parts were available the total cost of parts, without labour would make it uneconomical. Where you see the word Genuine, there are cheap alternatives available.
When buying used appliances, unless you know where they are coming from, it’s not worth the risk. The owner of this appliance once they found out that they had a problem, found that the advert had been removed and was unable to contact the seller to complain.
