🚦 THIS WEEK’S DRIVING LESSON: TRAFFIC LIGHTS

Understanding the traffic-light sequence and knowing how to react correctly is an essential part of safe driving.

🔴 RED LIGHT

🛑 STOP

* You must stop before the stop line.
* Do not enter the junction.
* Wait for the signal to change.

🔴🟠 RED + AMBER TOGETHER

🛑 STILL STOP

* Red and amber together means the red light is still showing.
* You must remain stopped.
* It tells you that the green light is about to show.
* Do not move off until the green light appears.

🟢 GREEN LIGHT

✅ GO — IF IT IS SAFE

* You may proceed if the road ahead is clear.
* Continue to check for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
* Be prepared to stop if the situation changes.

🟠 AMBER LIGHT

🛑 STOP IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO

* If you are before the stop line, you must stop unless you have already crossed it or stopping could cause an accident.
* Don’t accelerate to try to beat the red light.
* Amber follows green and warns that the signal is changing to red.

🟢➡️ GREEN FILTER ARROW

➡️ FOLLOW THE ARROW

* You may proceed in the direction shown by the arrow.
* You must still give way where required.
* Make sure the way is clear before turning.

💡 KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

✅ Obey all traffic signals.
✅ Red = Stop.
✅ Red + amber = Still stop — green is about to show.
✅ Green = Go if the road is clear and it is safe.
✅ Amber = Stop if you can do so safely.
✅ Always look for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
✅ Never rush through an amber light just to beat the red.

❓ TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

1. You are before the stop line and the amber light comes on. What should you do?

A️⃣ Continue through the junction
B️⃣ Stop before the stop line if it is safe to do so
C️⃣ Speed up to beat the red light
D️⃣ Wait to see if it changes to green

2. You are stopped at a red light and red + amber appear together. What does this mean?

A️⃣ You can go if the road is clear
B️⃣ Remain stopped — the green light is about to show
C️⃣ Slow down and get ready to go
D️⃣ There is a fault with the lights

🚗 THIS WEEK’S DRIVING LESSON: APPROACHING A ZEBRA CROSSING 🚶

Zebra crossings are an important part of everyday driving. Good observation and planning give you more time to react safely.

As you approach a zebra crossing:

👀 Look well ahead – Scan the pavement and crossing for pedestrians.

🪞 Check your mirrors – Be aware of what’s happening behind you before changing speed.

🐢 Adjust your speed – Slow down early and be prepared to stop.

🚶 Watch pedestrians – Pay particular attention to anyone waiting to cross or approaching the crossing.

🛑 Be prepared to stop – Don’t leave your decision until the last moment.

⚠️ Never overtake a vehicle that has stopped or is stopping at the crossing.

💡 Remember: Good drivers don’t just react to hazards—they anticipate them early.

❓ TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

You’re approaching a zebra crossing and a pedestrian is waiting to cross. What should you do?

A️⃣ Continue because they haven’t stepped onto the crossing

B️⃣ Slow down and be prepared to stop

C️⃣ Sound your horn so they wait

D️⃣ Accelerate to get past quickly

Brake smoothly, choose a safe place to stop, and park close to the kerb under full control.

✅ Check your mirrors before reducing speed.
✅ Signal only when necessary.
✅ Stop smoothly and under full control.
✅ Finish close to the kerb without touching it.

💡 Remember: Safe drivers plan ahead—they don’t leave stopping until the last moment.

❓ Question for learners:

What does MSM stand for?

A️⃣ Mirrors – Speed – Manoeuvre

B️⃣ Mirrors – Signal – Manoeuvre

Always remember:

✅ Stay within the speed limit
✅ Slow down near schools, pedestrians, and parked cars

❓ Question for learners:

What does a 30 mph speed limit mean?

A️⃣ You must always drive at 30 mph

B️⃣ You should drive at 30 mph, even in poor weather

C️⃣ 30 mph is the maximum speed, but you should drive slower if conditions require

D️⃣ You can exceed 30 mph when overtaking

🚗 Today's Driving Tip: Positioning 🚗

Good positioning is one of the key skills for safe and confident driving.

Always position your vehicle correctly to give yourself the best view and to communicate your intentions clearly to other road users.

✅ Keep a safe distance from parked cars (at least a door's width where possible)
✅ Position correctly before turning left or right
✅ Stay in the correct lane at roundabouts and junctions
✅ Avoid driving too close to the centre line or the kerb
✅ Give yourself enough space to react to hazards

📍 Remember:

Good positioning = Better visibility + More time to react + Safer driving

❓ Question for learners:

When passing parked vehicles, how much space should you leave where possible?

A️⃣ A few centimetres

B️⃣ About a door's width

C️⃣ As close as possible to avoid oncoming traffic

D️⃣ It doesn't matter as long as you fit through

🚗 Today's Driving Tip: Signalling Correctly 🚗

Signals are there to communicate your intentions to other road users. A good signal, given at the right time, helps everyone stay safe.

Remember:

✅ Signal in good time
✅ Check your mirrors before signalling
✅ Don't signal too early or too late
✅ Make sure your signal benefits other road users
✅ Cancel your signal after completing the manoeuvre

🚦 The golden rule:

Mirror → Signal → Manoeuvre (MSM)

❓ Question for learners:

When should you signal before turning?

A️⃣ As early as possible, even if it confuses others

B️⃣ Only when you start turning

C️⃣ At the right time, so it clearly informs other road users of your intention

D️⃣ Only if there are cars behind you

💬 Comment your answer below!

Don't worry if you're not sure—have a guess and let's learn together! 😊
