Live in Sandwell? We need your help!

Enjoy The Air and i2 media, a team of researchers has embarked on a mission funded by the UKRI to improve air quality in the Sandwell area; this is a project funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

We are interested in how to effectively present real-time air pollution data to create short and long-term positive health impacts for the citizens of Sandwell.

To achieve this goal, we want to hear your ideas on how air pollution data can be digitally presented to engage and stimulate the community of Sandwell.

We would like to discuss and consider how visual information can lead to individuals making positive environmental changes in their everyday lives.

Would you like to contribute to this exciting, topical area of research?

• We will be holding multiple fun, informal workshops throughout the afternoon and evening on Monday, January 23rd at Sandwell Council.

• This is a paid opportunity at £20 for the session.

• The session lasts approximately 90 minutes and refreshments will be provided.

If you would like to take part in a fun, informal session of generating ideas for this project, read more about the project and register your interest here:

https://wh1.snapsurveys.com/s.asp?k=167387905346

You will be contacted by a member of our research team the week before the 23rd of January if you’re selected to take part.

We hope to see you soon!

Air pollution and children’s mental health

According to estimates from the World Health Organization, more than 90% of children breathe air pollution at levels that are harmful to their health and development.

Air pollution, especially PM2.5, may have a disproportionately negative impact on children's mental and emotional development, with consequences for their cognitive and behavioral outcomes as well, since children's brains and behavior are still developing up until their late teens and early adulthood.

Best Air Quality Towns & Cities in the UK

None of the 42 towns and cities in the UK that are at risk are in Scotland. Air pollution is still a problem in places like Edinburgh and Glasgow, of course. However, the levels of dangerous pollutants in the air are below WHO standards.

Other places with good air quality are: Mid Wales, Devon, Peak District & Cornwall

How Does Air Quality Change?

The following factors can have an impact on the local air quality:

✅Transportation activity
✅Agriculture
✅Industrial activity
✅Burning fuel
✅The weather & layout of the city

Do you know what it’s like for you and how it could be improved?

Since we now understand the harm caused by air pollution, inaction is not an option. Here are excellent reasons why we should minimise and get rid of air pollution from our lives.

1- A health emergency is being caused by contaminated air.

Today, there is no question that air pollution poses a serious threat to everyone's health. Everyone is at danger, including mothers cooking over open fires, children walking to school, and unborn children.

Asthma, other respiratory conditions, and heart disease are just a few of the harmful health effects that have been linked to breathing in polluted air, regardless of where the sources of the pollution are: on the street or within the home.

2- The most danger is to children.

93% of children worldwide breathe air that is more polluted than what the World Health Organisation (WHO) deems to be safe for human health. As a result, air pollution causes 600,000 early deaths among children each year. As if that weren't enough, breathing contaminated air impairs brain growth, increasing the chance of cognitive and motor impairments in youngsters as well as chronic disease later in life.

3- The right to clean air is a human right

In addition, the right to clean air is completely guaranteed by the Sustainable Development Goals, the international road map for peace and prosperity, as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.

How does air pollution affect our health?

The majority of people in Europe reside in locations where air pollution can be very bad. Numerous illnesses, including stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, trachea, bronchus, and lung malignancies, worsened asthma, and lower respiratory infections, can be brought on by both short-term and long-term exposure to air pollution.

The biggest environmental health risk in Europe is air pollution, which is a significant contributor to early death and disease. The most significant health effects continue to be caused by fine particulate matter (PM2.5), according to the most recent estimations by the European Environment Agency (EEA).

What impact does pollution have on our health?

Exposure to air pollution is linked to oxidative stress and inflammation in human cells, which may serve as a precursor to chronic illnesses and cancer. The World Health Organisation's (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer classified air pollution as a human carcinogen in 2013.

The study of how air pollution affects health is always evolving. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, obesity, and abnormalities of the reproductive, nervous, and immune systems are currently among the public health concerns.

Previously we have linked the benefits of cycling to the environment. This post is all about you and helping you to feel better.

1-Air pollution reduction

Many people drive a few times each day. More specifically, we enter our automobiles at least twice a day—once to travel to work and once to return home. That number can be much higher if we have to stop at the grocery store or pick up the kids from school.

Contrarily, cycling requires very little fossil fuel. This indicates that riding a bike is a zero-pollution mode of transportation. Every time you commute to work, you could save almost 3,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions by riding a bike instead of a car.

2-No more issues with parking or crowds

Another benefit of biking is that fewer accidents will likely occur because impatient driving won't be as common. Additionally, urban dwellers are aware of how difficult it can be to hear traffic noise in the morning. You are unable to get quality rest. Living in that kind of setting can lead to certain psychological and physical issues. Our physical and mental wellness are both equally vital. Logically, one cannot always relocate to a more tranquil setting. Therefore, let's use bicycles to bring harmony to cities!

3-Enhancement of Individual Health

We informed you about the advantages of biking for the environment. Every person on this globe can still gain some personal advantages. Cycling is frequently linked to an improvement in physical health. This behavior promotes emotional and mental well-being. Your posture, flexibility, strength, cardiovascular stamina, and general mood are all enhanced. Additionally, cycling allows you to spend time outside and breathe fresh air. There are several personal health advantages to bicycling.

Why is air pollution bad for babies and pregnant women?

According to preliminary findings, women become far less efficient at "cleaning" air pollution from their bodies during pregnancy, increasing the likelihood that they may expose the developing fetus to tiny particles of pollution such as car fumes.

The research analyst, Professor Cathy Thornton of Swansea University, was taken aback by how much air pollution affected pregnant women's bodies' capacity to eliminate particles.

“I was already really aware of the air pollution pregnancy problem but doing this research has frightened me immensely,” she told inews.

“Pregnant women are not very good at taking up these particulates into the part of their immune system that would normally clear them. They are nowhere near as good as not-pregnant women. So that would suggest they may then be more available in a pregnant woman, which then means there is more likelihood of passing them to the placenta and the baby. It’s a bit frightening.”
