How can you optimise your collections audit process?
As part of a collections audit and documentation review for English Heritage, a new framework was developed to modernise how large and complex heritage collections could be managed.
We highlighted issues around completing linear A-Z audits.
The study proposed an Audit Sampling Tool that prioritises objects according to risk factors and weighted sampling.
A key outcome from this was the development of a statistically-led audit methodology based on confidence levels, margins of error, and stratified sampling techniques.
Rather than applying arbitrary "audit target" percentages, the framework uses statistical tools to determine optimal sample sizes, enabling organisations to achieve measurable assurance while making the best use of limited staff resources.
By combining statistical analysis, risk modelling and SPECTRUM, the project demonstrated how data-driven decision-making can improve inventory control, strengthen governance, support accreditation requirements and provide greater confidence in the accuracy of collection records across large and diverse heritage estates.
