To start the development process, we hosted a group workshop involving
designers, engineers, the climate relay team and even some of the baton carriers
themselves. This led to us unofficially rebranding COP (Conference Of Parties) to Community of People, setting the tone of the what we wanted to represent. This baton was different from other event batons - it wasn’t inviting nations to participate; it was highlighting incredible initiatives working to improve our planet internationally.
The next step was putting together some concepts for the climate
relay team, with the favourite featuring elements that reflected the relay and
its aims: one climate message surrounded by 18 wooden dowels representing the 18 nations, held together with 4 avenues of change (international, national, local and individual) made from solid steel bands, highlighting that we’re stronger together.
Once the concept was finalised, the team from 4c got started on prototyping and testing the baton to make sure it would not only look good, but be comfortable for the thousands of baton carriers and durable enough to withstand its non-stop journey from Glasgow to Sharm El Sheikh.
