We are delighted to announce we are now members of Food & Drink. This is an exciting chapter for 4c as we explore potential opportunities to work with some of the largest and most innovative member companies in Scotland.

We will be hosting an event at 4c Design (Glasgow) early in 2026 inviting members to see around our studio and to discuss navigating innovation in all its forms, especially around the engineering behind food and drink production.

Watch this space!

Big thank you to CeeD (Centre for Engineering, Education and Development) for inviting their members to our office at 4c for a morning of inspiring chat, an introduction to innovation (and how to de-risk it) and a little bit of networking thrown in.

Always a pleasure to host these events, because we love hearing about everyone's journeys and what all the different businesses are doing out there!

Until the next time....

Roxan approached 4c Design for support with the design of a new tag gun system that would make it easier for farmers to reliably identify their flocks.

Our final design solution allows the user to load 20 tags into a magazine, place a tag into the sheep’s ear and then automatically load the next tag ready to go.

Roxan put the 'TagFaster' into production immediately. It was very well received by customers and won Roxan a silver award for technical innovation from the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland.

The completed baton was then handed over to the Climate Relay team, ready to begin it’s epic 7,200km journey, through 18 countries.

Jamie Hay, Running Out of Time Co-Founder and Director, had this to say about the project: "Working with 4c to develop the Running Out of Time relay baton has been a fantastic experience. The team understood that the baton is at the heart of the relay's story and the result is something that is unique and perfectly captures our mission of togetherness in the fight against the climate crisis.”

We had a great time working with the Climate Relay team for their first climate relay and are so happy to see our baton back out on the road again, helping to deliver its latest climate message!

Once everyone was happy with the prototype, creation of the Running Out of Time Baton could begin. We explored several approaches for building the baton, however we stuck to our ambition to repurpose as much material as possible, without buying new stock or using rare materials.

The final baton we created was made from repurposed stainless steel that was painstakingly plasma cut, formed, welded and finished. Wooden dowel that was left over from a project long ago was reformed and bent to suit, and a laser cutter was used to add the logo. We were even able to repurpose a GPS tracker from client’s previous relays.

To start the development process, we hosted a group workshop involving
designers, engineers, the climate relay team and even some of the baton carriers
themselves. This led to us unofficially rebranding COP (Conference Of Parties) to Community of People, setting the tone of the what we wanted to represent. This baton was different from other event batons - it wasn’t inviting nations to participate; it was highlighting incredible initiatives working to improve our planet internationally.

The next step was putting together some concepts for the climate
relay team, with the favourite featuring elements that reflected the relay and
its aims: one climate message surrounded by 18 wooden dowels representing the 18 nations, held together with 4 avenues of change (international, national, local and individual) made from solid steel bands, highlighting that we’re stronger together.

Once the concept was finalised, the team from 4c got started on prototyping and testing the baton to make sure it would not only look good, but be comfortable for the thousands of baton carriers and durable enough to withstand its non-stop journey from Glasgow to Sharm El Sheikh.

In 2022, World Relay approached 4c based to design them a baton for the ‘Running out of Time’ relay, a non-stop relay travelling through 18 countries and over 7,200km. The aim was to deliver a climate change message to world leaders at COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh, highlighting incredible initiatives being undertaken to help improve our planet.

The baton, made using repurposed and upcycled materials, not only survived its international adventure, but was such a success that it is being given a second lease of life for this year’s climate relay!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be giving you a look behind the scenes at what was involved in bringing the Running out of Time Baton to life.

We've been a bit quiet as we focus on delivering some awesome projects. One of which is (yet another) baton for the Running Out of Time . Our design director took it out for a literal test run this morning.
