Funny how different people are online compared to real life.

Out of all the people I've met over the years who've commented on my beard, only one has ever told me to shave it off - hear that story in the full Stroll Series video - The Hardest Part.

It's easy to sit behind a screen, type something nasty and walk away.

But here's the thing.

I nearly talked myself out of writing this book.

Not because I didn't have anything to write about.

But because I kept thinking, "Who would want to read my story?"

And that pretty much sums up why I ended up writing Start Ugly in the first place.

For most of my life, I've struggled with self-doubt.

I was a quiet kid growing up in Macmerry. I wasn't the loudest in the room, I didn't particularly enjoy being the centre of attention and I spent far too much time worrying about what other people thought.

Even when I started Braw Beard in 2012, I had no idea what I was doing.

I just started.

Made mistakes.

Learned.

Tried again.

And slowly, over time, I became more confident in what I was doing.

But here's the thing.

I didn't become confident and THEN start Braw Beard.

I started Braw Beard and built confidence along the way.

The same happened with boxing, mountain biking, university and plenty of other things throughout my life.

And when I sat down to write this book, I realised I was doing it all over again.

Questioning myself.

Wondering if I was good enough.

Thinking about all the reasons I shouldn't bother.

Fourteen years of learning this lesson and I was still falling into the same trap ๐Ÿ˜‚

That's when I realised something.

Self-doubt doesn't necessarily disappear when you achieve things.

You just get better at recognising it and refusing to let it make your decisions.

That's why I wrote Start Ugly.

Not because I've got life figured out.

Not because I think I'm some motivational guru.

But because I know what it's like to hold yourself back before you've even given yourself a chance.

And if sharing my mistakes, experiences and the lessons I've learned helps even one person finally take that first step towards something they've been putting off, then writing it will have been worth it.

You don't need confidence to start.

Sometimes you need to start to build confidence.

If you want a softer beard, your routine needs to start BEFORE you reach for the beard oil.

The best thing growing a beard gave me wasn't the beard.

It was confidence.

I was a really shy wee guy growing up. Talking to people made me nervous and I'd spend ages afterwards replaying conversations in my head.

Now I'm talking here on socials and YouTube, speaking on stages and meeting people I never imagined I'd meet.

The beard wasn't some magical fix, but it became part of finding my confidence and building a life I couldn't have imagined back then.

And a massive part of that has been the people I've met along the way.

There's a sentence I never thought I'd say.

I've been keeping this quiet for most of the year, but on Friday 30th October, I'm releasing my first book.

It's called START UGLY.

Fourteen years ago, I started Braw Beard with around ยฃ300 and absolutely no idea what I was doing.

But the story started long before that.

I grew up as a quiet kid in a small Scottish mining village, constantly doubting myself and worrying about what other people thought.

Boxing helped me find my feet.

Mountain biking gave me something to chase.

A serious crash in 2011 changed everything.

And somehow, that chain of events eventually led to me starting Braw Beard.

Over the last 14 years, I've made plenty of mistakes, taken chances I probably wasn't ready for, met some incredible people and learned more about myself than I ever expected.

But there's one thing that took me a long time to understand.

Confidence doesn't come before you start. It comes from starting.

That's what this book is about.

It's not a business manual and it's definitely not me pretending I've got life figured out.

It's an honest account of the setbacks, self-doubt, mistakes, relationships and experiences that have shaped me.

I wrote it for anyone who's ever wanted to do something but held themselves back because they didn't feel ready, capable or confident enough.

Because I've been that person.

And sometimes I still am.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that you don't need to have everything figured out before you begin.

Sometimes you just have to START UGLY.

The book will be available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle from Friday 30th October, coinciding with Braw Beard's 14th anniversary.

I'll be sharing more about it over the next few weeks.
