Clyde fans! Find out your fate today:

https://www.colinchaloner.com/clyde-tarot

You might have seen me doing these tarot cards over Christmas and January. I started doing Clyde to remind me of home when I was down south, but then it expanded out to my other favourite Glasgow mascots (in particular Bonnie from the Euros, and St. Mungo from beer / religion / history).

I decided I wanted to put these cards to work, so I've built this interactive tarot reader for my website (which will have to do until I can figure out how to make a physical tarot deck). Why not have a go and find out what fate's got in store for you? Clyde knows all! 👁✨🔮

*Please note: this is fan-art. The mystical spirits who created it just want to celebrate local hero Clyde, and the legacy of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
**Also, the format is massively derivative of Illo.tv's tarot-o-bot - so have a look at that if you get a chance. Its great.
***ALSO - thanks Illustration, etc. for sending good vibes and encouraging me to keep going. Cheers Rosemary. Also, Rob Jones for getting me the Tarot deck in the first place!

Geneva Centre for Security and justice

This animation had to do a number of things: 1) cover some key facts as infographics; 2) tell a human story that would make the theory more relateable; and 3) appeal to an audience of developing world military officials who we were told were unlikely to respond to anything that felt like a cartoon.

In the end, the solution I came up with drew heavily on photography and the aesthetics of journalism. Although the narrative scenes ultimately had to be imagined, animated sequences, I was able to blend photography into the compositions, and I stuck to a colour palette that was sympathetic to the gritty military reality of the content.

Zero Tolerance needed a campaign film which showed how discrimination and gender inequality lead directly to violence against women. I drew on their strong monochrome branding, playing with the light and shadow, and with things emerging out of darnkess and being dragged into the light.

Saheliya wanted a video for their website which would explain the service in a concise and accessible way. Their translation service is run by women from diverse backgrounds, and they provided us with a set of traditional fabrics from each of their home countries and asked us if these could be integrated into the graphics.

I used abstract shapes to reveal the different fabrics and tell the story, weaving everything together with organic textures and embroidered lines.

The NHS approached us to create a series of films taking patients through the process of having a feeding tube fitted. The graphics needed to feel authoritative but accessible and unthreatening. I chose to reference old 80s biology textbook graphics, that might feel familiar and comfortable to the audience, but still be trusted as a source of knowledge.

Design and animation are by me. Overall film production is by the team at media co-op, in collaboration with the NHS.

Poverty Alliance

This is the second film we created for Poverty Alliance following a successful campaign in 2019. The new animation looked at how changes in government policy can deliver a future without poverty.

We worked with the NHS to create this training. It covers best practice for social workers, healthcare workers and other involved parties, when encountering domestic violence.

A bit of process from the Stay Mobile Stay connected project. There were some key things the group wanted to hang onto from the initial concepts, and you can see how it developed. The main use case was always going to be video so it had to be something that would animate in a fun way.

I did some participatory branding for Roar recently, a group who work with older people to enhance health and wellbeing. I worked with a group of service users to develop a brand for their new initiative 'Stay Mobile Stay Connected'. Their ideas were really helpful and I think the result works well both in print and as titles for the series of films they created.

A booklet for Feral Arts's Training on Scotland's Native Minority Languages – a session which comprised a performance of 'O is for Hoolet' followed by a series of workshops. The show explores Scotland's identity as a multilingual nation, and looks in particular at how BSL, Scots and Gaelic have been marginalised at various points in our history and how we can address this today.

I wanted to avoid anything that would feel like a cliche of what 'Scotland' is (tartan, saltires etc), as the production was specifically about inclusivity and the fluid nature of Scottish identity. Instead I drew on organic flowing forms and a bold, high-contrast design that felt forward looking and current.
