Sometimes a good idea needs changing before it is actually the right idea.

This week I launched Roadmap Action Days for my Roadmappers. The idea was that you could come into the office, get some 1 to 1 time with me and then spend the day working through your Roadmap.

I loved the idea. Then something started bothering me.

If there were too many people in the room, some of you could be waiting most of the day for your 1-to-1. And if the whole point is to give you proper space to focus, I didn’t want to accidentally create another busy, noisy environment.

So I changed it.

For October, I’m opening a small number of Roadmapper Work Days instead.

You come in first thing for an hour with me so we can look at where you are, what has slipped, what you need to focus on next and make sure your priorities are clear.

Then you can stay and work from Clarity HQ for the rest of the day.

I’ll only take a maximum of two people per day, so you get:

→ Proper 1 to 1 time with me
→ A quiet place to work
→ The day protected in your diary
→ Me nearby if you get stuck or need to ask something

Because the Roadmap itself is rarely the problem.

Life gets busy. Client work takes over. You lose momentum. Or you get your Roadmap and suddenly think, “Where on earth do I start?”

Completely normal.

I know this because I have my own Roadmap too, and I have been updating it this week. Finding the time to work on your own business is not always easy, even when you know exactly how important it is.

Roadmappers: I’ve emailed the October dates directly to you, so check your inbox and reply if you want one.

And if you’re reading this thinking, “I could really do with a Roadmap in the first place”, I also have some availability in October and November.

If cost is the thing stopping you, ask me. We can look at payment plans and, depending on where you are based and what is available, there may also be funding options worth exploring.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is simply give yourself the time and space to work on it.

There is one part of Growth Roadmap prep that I never get tired of.

Reading the answers people send me beforehand.

I ask about what you love, what you are struggling with, what you want the business to look like in future, what has lost its spark and what you would really like to change.

And every single time, there is so much passion in those answers.

Sometimes it is obvious. Sometimes it is buried under being busy, overwhelmed, stuck or a bit unsure of what comes next. Sometimes people even write things like, “this might sound silly...”

It never does.

Those honest answers are what help me prepare properly. They show me where the excitement is, where the frustration is, where confidence has dipped and where the real opportunities might be.

There is no right or wrong answer when you fill in your Growth Roadmap forms.

The more honest you are, the more useful I can make the day.

Because the aim is not to hand you a generic list of things you “should” be doing.

It is to help you build a plan that feels realistic, doable and much closer to the parts of the business you actually want more of.

And yes, I genuinely do get this excited reading your prep forms.

Here’s the thing about supporting small businesses… I’m not always very good at it either.

Everyone talks about supporting small businesses and, as small business owners, we genuinely know why it’s so important. We know that a like, a comment, a share or a recommendation can make a real difference.

So why oh why are we sometimes so bad at actually doing it?! 😂

I’m guilty of it too. I’ll scroll, read posts, sometimes laugh, sometimes feel educated or inspired and think “that’s brilliant” and then somehow… I just keep scrolling.

Before I know it, I’m in the depths of social media looking at posts that have absolutely nothing to do with anyone I know, work with or support.

So I’m making a conscious effort to stop doing that.

While I love discovering new businesses and finding new people, I also really love seeing the people I already know grow. I want to support them, so I’ve added something to my diary, which is when I do all my social media growth activities.

I’m going to make sure I spend a few minutes finding 10 posts from businesses I know and doing something to support them — liking, commenting, sharing or recommending them.

It’ll literally take me minutes, but it could make a real difference to someone who is trying to grow their business.

And if we all did something small and achievable like this every week, imagine the difference we could make to the businesses around us.

The hard bit - knowing where to start! Look at your client list, the people you’ve met recently at a networking event, your friends, your suppliers or even the businesses you use yourself. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of people you’d be happy to support.

So what can you do that is achievable for you?

Maybe it’s 5 posts, maybe it’s 10, maybe it’s recommending a business to someone who you know needs their service. Maybe it’s leaving a testimonial. It can be one thing. But add it to your diary - or it isn’t happening!

It doesn’t have to take hours. We just need to get better at actually doing the thing we’re always telling everyone else to do… support small businesses.

Last few days to book for September’s Growth Group!

If September is already starting to look a bit hectic, this is your chance to get ahead of it before the month runs away with you.

On Friday 4 September, we’re back at Clarity HQ for a full morning of planning, prioritising and getting your diary into some sort of sensible order.

We’ll look at:

→ Client work
→ Sales activity
→ Marketing
→ Networking
→ The jobs that keep getting pushed to “when I have time”
→ What actually needs your attention this month

The aim is simple. You leave knowing what you’re doing, when you’re doing it and what matters most.

Then, after lunch, I’ll be handing over to Esraa Karam from Pinnacle Business Hub Ltd for How to Read Your Analytics.

Because having lots of numbers is one thing. Knowing what they’re actually telling you is another!

Esraa will help you understand what to look at, what matters, what probably doesn’t, and how to use your analytics to make better decisions about your marketing and business growth.

So you’ll leave with both your September plan and a much better idea of how to judge whether the things you’re doing are actually working.

Friday 4 September
9.30am to 2.30pm
Clarity HQ
Tea and coffee included

Only a few days left to book your place.

I’m heading to Ideas Fest on Thursday 10 September, where I’ll be hosting a panel on a subject that comes up in almost every conversation I have about marketing:

Content That Actually Converts

Because lots of content gets seen. Very little of it actually sells.

We can get caught up in likes, reach, views and follower numbers, but the bigger question is whether our content is doing a job for the business.

Is it reaching the right people?
Is it building trust?
Is it creating enquiries?
Is it helping turn followers into customers?

That’s exactly what we’ll be getting into during this panel.

I’ll be joined by a brilliant mix of experts:

Josh Exell, EXF.STUDIO
Mark Choueke, OrbitalX
Nicola J Rowley, NJRPR
Chloe Blades, It’s Chloe Co

We’ll be talking about:

• Creating content with a clear purpose
• Turning attention and followers into buyers
• Understanding what is actually working
• Knowing the difference between useful metrics and vanity metrics
• Creating content that supports the wider sales journey, rather than just filling a feed

I’m really looking forward to moderating this one because I suspect there will be plenty of different opinions around the table, which always makes for a much better conversation!

I have a new Growth Roadmap booked into the diary.

The client is very knowledgeable about business growth. She knows all the things her business should be doing. She has loads of ideas, understands what works and has a pretty clear idea of where she wants the company to go.

She has also got ridiculously busy, let a few things slip, moved the Roadmap date more times than I care to admit and is now well overdue a proper look at the business.

The client is me. 😂

I spend so much of my time helping other business owners look at the bigger picture that I realised I needed to do exactly the same for Clarity Consultants.

The business has grown. New opportunities have appeared. Some things that made sense a year ago might not make sense now. And while I know what I could be doing, knowing and actually having a clear, prioritised plan are two very different things.

So I’m giving myself the same treatment I give my clients.

A proper look at what’s working.
What’s not.
Where the money is coming from.
What I want more of.
What I need to stop doing.
What opportunities I’m missing.
And what the next stage of Clarity Consultants actually looks like.

I don’t just talk about making time to work on your business. I genuinely believe in it, and sometimes that means recognising when I need to follow my own advice.

And weirdly, I’m every bit as excited about doing my own Roadmap as I am when I sit down with a client.

Possibly slightly more nervous about what the consultant is going to tell me though... 😬

I’m looking forward to joining Glow Club’s Business Boost Day on Wednesday 16th September as one of their guest experts.

The theme for the day is Sales, Systems & Strategies for Growth, and I’ll be there talking all things Growth & Revenue Strategy.

What I like about this event is that it isn’t just about sitting and listening to people talk about what you could be doing. There’s time built in to actually look at your own business, ask questions and start putting some of it into action while the experts are still in the room.

I’ll be joining:

✨ Elaine from Mission Profitable on profitable pricing
✨ Luna Virtual Solutions on business systems and support
✨ Blackbird Eleven on operations, systems and AI

We’ll kick things off with networking before moving into a panel discussion, expert sessions and focused implementation time.

So, if you’re currently wondering where your next bit of growth is coming from, whether your pricing is right, what systems you need or where AI might genuinely save you time, come along and pick our brains!

Blythswood Hotel, Glasgow
Wednesday 16th September
9.45am to 4pm
Non-members welcome, tickets from £35 + VAT

You can book through Glow Club Business.

And yes, I fully expect to be asking you plenty of questions about your business too... that’s usually how these things go!

I’m officially a speaker at The Scottish Marketing Summit 2026!

Ahead of the event, I joined founder Susan Carruthers for a long chat about my rather colourful career path, how I ended up doing what I do now, and some of the lessons I’ve picked up along the way.

We also shared a sneak peek at what you can expect from my talk at this year’s Summit.

If you’re coming along, this will give you a good idea of what I’ll be talking about. And if you’re not, have a listen anyway... there are a few stories in there!

Sometimes the right time to work on your business is not when things are going wrong. Sometimes it is when things are going well, but you know it is time to take a wee step back and look at what comes next.

That is exactly what Carla did during her Growth Roadmap session.

She is eight or nine years into business, things are going well, but she wanted space to properly look at where she is now, what she wants her business to look like and, just as importantly, what she wants her life to look like alongside it.

Because that is the part I think gets missed a lot.

We do not build businesses in isolation. We build them around families, energy, time, confidence, capacity, goals, responsibilities and real life. So during a Growth Roadmap, we do not just look at sales and marketing in a neat little box. We look at the whole picture.

In Carla’s words, we spent the morning taking everything apart. We looked at the different areas of her business, what time she actually has available, what needs to change, where she wants to go and what new goals and deadlines make sense.

Then in the afternoon, we turned that into a practical plan.

Not vague ideas. Not “that would be nice one day.” Actual next steps. What needs to happen, what support or training might be needed, what fits with her life and family, and what feels realistic enough to actually do.

And yes, there was lunch, lots of coffee and plenty of humour, because I do not believe business planning needs to be dry, awkward or painful. We are allowed to get serious work done and still have a laugh while we do it.

Carla said she knew it would be good, but she did not expect it to be that good, which I will absolutely be taking as my review for the week.

The Growth Roadmap is valuable at any stage of business, whether you are starting out, growing, changing direction or simply ready to stop and reassess where you are going next.

If you feel like it is time to step back, look at the whole picture and build a plan that actually works for your business and your life, I have Roadmap dates available from late August onwards.

Send me a message if you want to chat through whether it is the right fit.
