Always shying away from asking for help?
Here's my simple method for getting what you need without feeling awkward about it.

1. Pick a challenge you'd like to address.
2. Pick someone from your peers/seniors who is known for their expertise in this area.
3. Send them this email:

Dear X
I want to understand process/project X better.
Because of your experience, I’d like to ask you a few questions about it.
Could you give me X minutes of your time in the next X days to go over these, please?
If not, could you recommend someone else who would be equally qualified to help?

Give it a try, and let me know how you get on!

You are having an impact.
How you choose to speak, act- or refrain from either - impacts how others think and feel.

Are you conscious of your impact? And is it the impact you want to have?

This theme underpins all the training I provide: what impact are you having, and is it getting the desired results? I often use a simple exercise with new managers, which breaks into two questions:

1. What do you remember - good or bad - about your past leaders?
2. What do you want your current and future team members to remember about you?

They're great questions to begin the journey of self-awareness and growth as a leader.

So, over to you. How's your leadership journey going?

I used to juggle!

Seriously, in my younger days, I loved to juggle. I started by using soft juggling balls but eventually wanted to move on to clubs. A good friend lent me a set to get started before I bought my own. And I worked at it. I worked, and I worked and I worked at it. The number of times I dropped those clubs wasn't worth counting. The awkward catches were more problematic than the drops - I'd 'just' manage to catch the club, but it would slam into my hand, bruising the bones at the top of my palms. But I kept going. And finally, I got the reward for all that effort - the clubs went up, came down, and then went back up again. No fails!

It's a true story. I still own juggling clubs.

Of course, if I was really clever, I could now turn this into a post about how a new role means learning to juggle lots of new things. That the juggling process can be pretty painful to start with. That you might feel a bit bruised and frustrated when you make mistakes. But that, with the right support, you really can become adept and confident in your role.

But that would be far too predictable, wouldn't it?

Wouldn't it??

Struggling to stay afloat?
Feeling like each day is a fight to stay swimming rather than drowning in tasks and challenges?

As a new manager, you face a deluge of new responsibilities and expectations. More meetings, more responsibility for fixing problems, more people to manage... and that means many more difficult conversations that you need to have, whether addressing performance issues, resolving conflicts, or giving difficult news to senior managers.

You need equipping for the role. And that equipping looks like a structured combination of both training and coaching. Why? Because training addresses the knowledge and skill gaps, whilst coaching gives you the 1-2-1 space needed to apply those skills to your unique challenges.

😂 Not an original quote, and I wish I knew who first came up with it because I'd like to thank them for making me chuckle!

We've all been there, haven't we? Somehow Monday felt so long, we should be on Friday by now.

Joking aside, if your weeks are consistently feeling too long, and like every conversation is like another stone wall you have to climb over, it's definitely time for us to talk.

I help new Fund Accounting Managers go from surviving to thriving. Do we need to talk?

All work and no fun became my reality.

Work was consistently getting the best of me. I reached the point where I either couldn't meet up with friends because I was at work, or couldn't meet because I was too tired due to work.

Either way, I was missing out.

I loved my work, don't assume that I didn't. And I wanted to do a great job. But somewhere along the line, I lost the balance - so determined to give my work everything, I hadn't realised till I was in the thick of it that it meant I had nothing to give anything (or anyone) else.

Sound familiar?

Enjoying your work, and enjoying relationships with those you love, should both be possible. But it means taking a good look at how you're managing your work so that a better balance can be met. Because when that balance is found, everyone wins.

How often do you think about what gives your life those little sparks of joy?

We need them. Things can get tough - work, daily life, family stuff, it can all mount up.

So today, here's a wee reminder to take a moment and appreciate the things that give you joy in the day. Maybe it's the first coffee of the day. Maybe it's a friendly exchange with a random person in the supermarket aisle. Maybe it's finally getting to put your feet up and watch your favourite programme.

Here's one of my sparks of joy - Bagheera. I'm missing her a lot this week, as she is currently in the cattery avoiding the chaos of our kitchen being ripped out and replaced! But she'll be back with us very, very soon.

Please - I'd love to hear about your sparks of joy today! Share some of them with the rest of us in the comments below 😀

You were promoted for a reason. You're good at what you do.
But going from 'good' to 'great' will require some help.
Not because you're not good enough - we've already established you are.
But, instead, because learning and growing are the only ways to keep improving.

And that's where I come into the picture.
As a trainer and coach with nearly 20 years of experience supporting and developing new and aspiring leaders, I can help you become the Fund Accounting leader you want to be.

Want to know more? DM and let's arrange to talk.

Ouch! Too harsh?
Maybe - or maybe not.

A promotion typically brings initial elation - you did it! But soon after, all that can change. You discover how challenging the role can be and the weight of the demands can become overwhelming. You start to question whether you're capable of the role and whether others have started to think the same, too.

Even going in with your eyes supposedly wide open to what the role entails, there will always be surprises. Surprises can lead to overwhelm and anxiety. But here's where today's quote becomes powerful. My toughest challenges in the workplace were not due to the circumstances which were put upon me. Instead, they were due to how I responded to those challenges.

What happens next is up to you. If you want out of the anxiety, self-doubt and fear, then the first step is to speak up and say that help is needed.

Don't be the reason that your problems stick around and fester, instead of getting resolved.

** “But will it make a difference?” **

When you care about developing and engaging your workforce, then you want to know that any training you arrange is going to count. That it’s going to make a difference to your teams’ motivation, their understanding of your shared values, their readiness to give their very best to the work you do together.
Today is the first of five posts that I’ll be sharing this week on how to ensure training makes a difference.

** Tip 1 – design the delivery with your team members in mind. **
Let’s assume that you’ve already picked a subject that you know is going to make a difference. Productivity tools, leadership skills, self-development – whatever your subject, there’s plenty to choose from that will help your teams to thrive. But don’t stop there when it comes to make great choices – think about how the way it’s delivered will affect how well they can receive and respond. The temptation is to cram as much as possible into a full day. But that is exhausting for your team members, especially if it’s run online – would you be excited by the prospect of staring at your computer screen for a full day? It also ignores the reality that there is only so much new information that we can realistically put to good use in one sitting. Far better is to work with your training designer to identify the key learning points, and see how shorter sessions could give your teams the skills, knowledge, and reflective space needed to put their new-found knowledge into practice.

And that’s the first tip on how we ensure training makes a difference. Tune in tomorrow for tip 2!
