Why business data backups are essential and what is the 3-2-1 backup rule?

With Ransomware now a major threat to business infrastructure, it has never been more important to ensure your backup solution is applied and working correctly. If you become the victim of a Ransomware attack, then your backup solution is your guaranteed recovery mechanism.

There are many backup solutions and implementations available, however, the industry standard is to utilise the 3-2-1 rule.

3 copies or versions:
Having at least three different versions of your data over different periods of time ensures that you can recover from accidents or cyber-attacks. However, a good backup system will have many more than three copies.

2 different media:
You should not have both copies of your data on the same media. Consider, for example, if a single physical hard drive is split(partitioned) with one partition being backed up to the other, if the primary drive fails, the backup will fail as well. Therefore, you should always have the backup on different media than the original.

1 backup off-site:
At least one version of your backup should be stored in a different physical location than from the location you are backing up. Cloud backups are great, however, business backup data storage can get big..... very very big. Dont underestimate the bandwidth of a van traveling down the motorway with your backup media, especially if you have been hit by a major data loss incident and require a full recovery from your latest offsite backup.

Cyber Security Awareness month is coming to an end, however, at Ascent we promote cyber awareness all year round.

Email phishing scams are still one of the main methods used to gain access to internal business networks. Malware and Ransomware get to work as soon as an infected email attachment is opened. Think Before You Click.

It is not always obvious that an email attachment is infected, sophisticated phishing scams commonly spoof the sender information within an email, making it look like it is coming from a legitimate source. This is commonly used in targeted spear phishing campaigns to lure specific individuals in an organisation into opening an infected attachment. Think Before You Click.

Businesses rely on email and sending attachments, if you have any doubts then take a moment to confirm with the sender that they did indeed send an email with an attachment.
