Frozen Inheritance tax (IHT) Thresholds. The nil-rate band (Β£325,000) and the residence nil-rate band (Β£175,000) remain frozen until at least 2030. As asset values, especially property, increase with inflation, more estates that were previously exempt will become liable for IHT.

Putting in place finance & property and health & welfare Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is a very good idea. The consumer expert Martin Lewis certainly encourages it. Do you have a Power of Attorney? MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis explains how this crucial protection works, why it's more important than a will, and how to get one in the latest episode of ITV's The Martin Lewis Money Show Live.

In a Court of Appeal case in February 2024, the court had to determine whether one child had unduly influenced the mother to leave her a larger share of her estate under her will than her siblings. One take away is that, if you're going to give uneven shares to your children, make sure you spell out in writing why. A good will writer can help you avoid any accusation of undue influence or duress. Do contact us if you haven't made a will yet

Did you know that if you are not married or in a civil partnership, without a will your partner will not inherit from you. Instead, your children will inherit. If you have no children, it will be your parents. If your parents are no longer alive, it will be your siblings. This is unlikely to be what you want if you and your partner have been together for years. Best advice - change your relationship status and/or make a will 😊

Just posted this re your private pension death benefit. A four minute read.

Usually, death benefits under your private pension do not form part of your estate under your will because most pensions are set up under a discretionary trust and the pension administrator has discretion as to who receives the death benefits.
