Wow, a truly momentous moment for the team Brooke, Action For Working Horses and Donkeys who have secured an African-wide ban on the horrifying Donkey Skin Trade for the next 15 years – sparing the lives of approximately half a million donkeys!
This is a fantastic achievement and I'd like to send my well wishes to all involved in making this happen.
Since the signing of the Dar es Salaam declaration at the Pan-African Donkey Skin Trade Conference in Tanzania almost one year ago, the Brooke team across Africa have been working tirelessly to make this commitment a reality. Now, the African Union has endorsed the report ‘Donkeys in Africa now and in the future’ - which Brooke contributed to - agreeing that a continental moratorium (ban) on the Donkey Skin Trade is urgently needed to protect declining donkey populations across all of Africa.
The ban is due to be adopted in February 2024 when the report’s recommendations are put forward to the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments.
This truly is an historic moment for working donkeys so again thank you to everyone that supports Brooke, Action For Working Horses and Donkeys. This historic change is shared with you also.
