I’ve just been reading this article about crisis apparitions, ghostly encounters, infrasound, intuition, and all the quirky ways our minds try to make sense of the world when life gets uncertain. It’s a brilliant reminder of how imaginative, alert, and downright mysterious humans can be.

Here’s the link if you fancy a weekend read: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/202609/i-see-dead-people

So while you sip your Saturday coffee… let’s play with a few questions:

✨ When people sense a loved one at the moment they die, is that intuition… or something else entirely?
✨ Are “ghostly feelings” spiritual, psychological, or just clever old houses humming below our hearing range?
✨ Do we turn to the paranormal because it’s real — or because it helps us feel grounded when life gets chaotic?
✨ And what does it say about us that uncertainty makes our imagination switch on like a torch?

Seeing ghosts, sensing loved ones at the time of their death, perceiving paranormal activity, and blaming Mercury in retrograde when life falls apart are more common than we think. The Canterbury Ghost Story Festival takes place at St Gregory’s in Canterbury on Saturday 3 October, bringing together academics, writers, performers and folklorists for a day exploring the history of the ghost story and our continuing fascination with supernatural experience.

The festival marks the 320th anniversary of The Apparition of Mrs Veal, set in Canterbury and widely regarded as the first modern English ghost story.

One of the highlights of the event will be the rare opportunity to see the original manuscript of M. R. James’s Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad, one of the most beloved English ghost stories, brought out of the archive specially for the day.

The programme also includes two live M. R. James performances from Robert Lloyd Parry; Dan Baines of Lebanon Circle, exploring cursed objects, folklore and the supernatural; biographer Brian J. Corrigan, discussing his studies and performances of M. R. James and Charles Dickens; and Mark Jones of The Haunted Archive, alongside a wider programme of academics, writers and creatives.

Celebrating 320 years of the 'Modern Ghost Story' which started in Canterbury with a day of ghostly talks and performances!
