We’re incredibly proud to share that our enabling works and demolition apprentice, Amber Cox, has been named Student Changemaker of the Year at the prestigious VISTA Awards 2026, held at the House of Lords.

This was a fantastic event recognising excellence in skills, learning and community impact, with a very high standard of competition across all categories, making Amber’s achievement even more special.

What truly sets Amber apart and defines her as a changemaker is the impact she is making beyond her role.

✅ Championing opportunities for women in construction
✅ Helping to reshape perceptions of the industry through this story

Following the delivery of an enabling works package at St Albans City Hospital, supporting the construction of the new endoscopy unit for IHP (Integrated Health Projects by VINCI Building UK and Sir Robert McAlpine), we’re delighted to share some excellent client feedback.

Our Site Manager, Minty, has been nominated for an IHP Excellence Recognition Award, recognising his strong leadership, team coordination and unwavering focus on health and safety throughout the works.

The project also received positive feedback from local residents, particularly around the effective management of noise, dust, vibration and site cleanliness within a live healthcare environment.

A great achievement for Minty and a credit to the wider Downwell team involved.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re reinforcing something that matters deeply to us across the Downwell Group: 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

Over recent weeks, we’ve been delivering mental health toolbox talks across our sites, helping teams feel more confident starting conversations and knowing where to turn for support.

Last week, we were proud to welcome Andy and Sam from Lighthouse Charity’s Make It Visible team to our flagship residential redevelopment scheme in Westminster, London. The entire workforce stood down to attend their powerful and engaging session – a clear statement that wellbeing matters as much as safety and programme. Too many people in our industry are suffering in silence and dying from su***de.

One comment afterwards stayed with us:

“How clear it was that your organisation is a good one – well in touch with the humanity of the operations.”

As Ed Grundon, Head of Group Marketing and Mental Health First Aider, explains:

“Mental health at Downwell is not about lip service or awareness days alone. It’s about consistent, genuine, visible action on site and creating a culture where people genuinely feel supported. If we want a stronger industry, we have to lead with humanity.”

𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 ☀️

We’re pleased to be supporting the main contractor with a comprehensive enabling works solution on William Road in central London, forming a key part of a wider redevelopment scheme.

Our scope includes the full demolition of an existing building and substructure, delivered within a highly constrained urban environment. The works also incorporate asbestos removal by Inner City Environmental and demolition support by Inner City Scaffolding - demonstrating our unique, integrated, end-to-end approach to enabling works.

Andy Moore, Contracts Manager, said:

“This is a technically challenging site with tight boundaries, adjacent infrastructure and shared party walls, so planning and sequencing have to be right from day one. Having asbestos, demolition and specialist support delivered through our group provides a safer, more coordinated approach, and it’s exactly the type of complex enabling works we’re set up to deliver, especially in urban environments.”

We’re incredibly proud to have supported SPACE Hertfordshire Annual Easter Party last Thursday 💛🐣

As part of our enabling works project at St Albans City Hospital, and thanks to the opportunity provided by our client IHP (Integrated Health Projects by VINCI Building UK and Sir Robert McAlpine), our team was delighted to support this fantastic community event through both donation and volunteering.

Seeing the joy, creativity and confidence on display, from arts and crafts to sensory play and a visit from the Easter Bunny, was a powerful reminder of the positive impact and joy that comes from working closely with local communities.

SPACE charity does truly inspiring work supporting families of children with autism, ADHD and neurodiversity, and we’re proud to play our part in helping initiatives like this come to life.

Join Amber on site for a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s really like to start out as an apprentice in construction.

From leaving school to beginning her apprenticeship with Downwell, Amber quickly discovered a world of hands-on learning, fast-paced challenges, and a team that feels more like family.

In this video, Amber takes you through a typical day, from morning briefings and preparing the site, to developing new skills, earning qualifications, and gaining the confidence to take on more responsibility.

She shares the realities of the role:

👉 learning quickly on the job
👉 the support of her team
👉 balancing site work with college and training centre sessions

And what she loves most? The environment, the people, and seeing the real behind-the-scenes of how buildings are constructed and dismantled.

After a year with Downwell, Amber describes the experience as “awesome”, opening her eyes to how the real world works and revealing a career path she never imagined.

Her advice to other young people, especially women, considering construction?

“Go for it. If you find passion in it, it’s a good opportunity. You’ll find a world you never thought you would see.”
