Future Proof Yourself

Future Proof Yourself How to stay relevant and of value for the rest of your working career. If you don't look after your personal development who is going to do it for your?

23/02/2026

Are you thinking about how to manage the end of your career — or are you hoping it will just work itself out?

Many professionals in their 50s and 60s are finding the job market more challenging than ever. Ageism in recruitment, changing workplace demands, evolving technology and shifting earning potential can all make career progression feel uncertain. But one question we rarely ask ourselves is this:

How are we going to land our careers safely and comfortably?

In this video, I compare career development to the journey of professional sports people — not just elite footballers earning millions, but everyday athletes whose earning potential peaks and then declines. The difference? Most sports professionals know their career has a time limit — so they prepare.

Shouldn’t we do the same?

If you’re in your 40s, 50s or 60s, this video will help you think about:
- Career planning in later life
- Managing earning potential as you age
- Career transition strategies
- Preparing financially for retirement
- Protecting your employability in your 50s and 60s
- Adjusting expectations and managing ego
- Future proofing your career before it’s too late

Whether you're facing redundancy, struggling in the recruitment market, or simply thinking ahead, this is about taking control. Because if you don’t plan the landing — who will?

If you want to future proof yourself and stay valuable in a changing world of work, this conversation is essential.

What will our jobs look like in the next three years? Will you still be doing the same role… or could it be gone altogether?

Change has been described as the new normal for years, but the pace of change is accelerating faster than ever. New technologies, shifting job markets, and evolving skills requirements mean that staying relevant at work is no longer optional — it’s essential.

In this video, I share three practical tips to help you future-proof yourself and your career so you continue to add value and remain employable, whatever happens next.

We explore:
- Why you need to talk to more people inside your organisation, with clients, and across your industry
- How understanding the job and recruitment market helps you assess your marketability
- Why planned self-development is key to staying relevant over the rest of your working career

This video is for professionals who want to stay ahead of change, protect their employability, and feel confident about what comes next — whether that’s a new role, promotion, project, or career direction.

If you don’t look after your own future and career development, who will?

What is the value that you bring – and more importantly, can you clearly explain it to others?

You may be great at what you do and have a strong track record, but will talking about your past experience alone secure your next job, promotion, or project opportunity? In today’s fast-moving world of work, decision-makers are far more interested in the value you can deliver in the future.

In this video, part of the Future Proof Yourself series, we explore how to shift your mindset from simply listing what you’ve done before to clearly demonstrating the return on investment you offer. Think of yourself as a limited company: you sell your time, knowledge, experience, energy, and enthusiasm — so how well are you marketing that proposition?

You’ll learn why it’s essential to fully understand what employers, businesses, or project sponsors are really looking for before you start selling yourself. Whether you’re aiming for a new job, a career change, a promotion, or a leadership role on a project, success comes from showing how you will meet their needs, solve problems, and add real value going forward.

This video will help you:
- Stop relying solely on past achievements
- Clearly articulate the value you bring in the future
- Position yourself as a strong return on investment
- Align your strengths with what decision-makers actually want
- Market yourself with confidence and clarity

If you want to future proof yourself, improve your career prospects, and stand out in a competitive marketplace, this video is for you.

Competence and confidence go hand in hand — and if you want to future-proof yourself, you need to be able to demonstrate both. Whether you’re exploring new job opportunities, considering a career change, taking on new projects, or simply wanting to develop yourself further, confidence is the key that allows your competence to be seen.

In this video, we focus on how to build and strengthen your confidence so you can talk positively about yourself in interviews, professional conversations, and everyday life. While your skills, experience, and knowledge make up your competence, confidence is what allows others to recognise your value.

You’ll be guided through four simple but powerful questions designed to help you reflect, build self-belief, and create real examples you can use when asked about your strengths.

By writing these down and practising your answers, you’ll become more comfortable talking about your achievements and stepping outside your comfort zone. This is especially valuable when preparing for interviews, new opportunities, or moments when you need to demonstrate your confidence under pressure.

If you don’t talk positively about yourself, who will? Developing confidence is an ongoing process, and reflecting on your progress helps you realise that if you’ve done it before, you can do it again.

Are you just turning up… or are you actually contributing?

As we move into 2026, this is one question that could change everything about your career, your mindset, and your future opportunities.

It’s easy to show up, be present, and participate. But participation alone doesn’t create growth, impact, or momentum. Real progress comes when you decide to contribute, to make a difference, and to give that little bit more — in work, in life, and in yourself.

Using a powerful sports team analogy, this video challenges you to think differently about how you show up every day. Are you there just to make up the numbers, or are you there to help the team perform at its best?

The same principle applies to:
- Career development
- Personal growth
- Future-proofing yourself
- Creating new opportunities

No one else is coming to do this for you. There is no “them” or “they.” The choice is yours.

👉 Don’t just be a participant in 2026. Be a contributor!
👉 Make something positive happen — and enjoy the journey while you do it.

Do you struggle to talk positively about yourself, even though you’re great at recognising the strengths in others? You’re not alone. Many capable, experienced people find self-promotion uncomfortable, awkward, or even stressful – especially at work, in interviews, or when updating a CV or LinkedIn profile.

In this video, I share a simple but powerful exercise to help you build confidence, recognise your achievements, and learn how to talk positively about yourself without feeling boastful. This practical approach uses a storyboard method, turning your CV, career history, and personal achievements into a visual story you can learn, practise, and refer back to whenever you need it.

In this video you’ll learn:
- Why we often struggle to see our own strengths
- How to build confidence talking about your achievements
- How to storyboard your CV using a simple PowerPoint method
- How to recognise your skills, experience, and personal qualities
- How to prepare positive stories for interviews, appraisals, and networking
- Why learning to talk positively about yourself is essential for future-proofing your career

This exercise isn’t about ego or bragging. It’s about self-awareness, clarity, and confidence. By capturing your achievements, experiences, values, and strengths visually, you’ll start to change how you see yourself – and how others see you too.

If you want to future-proof yourself, grow in confidence, and be able to explain the value you bring now and in the future, this is a great place to start.

And remember: if you can’t talk positively about yourself, who’s going to do it for you?

The best gift you can give yourself is being positive about YOU.

In today’s fast-moving world, standing out from the crowd has never been harder. Everything moves quicker, expectations are higher, and opportunities don’t always come to those who quietly wait. One of the most important skills you can develop is learning how to talk positively about yourself — confidently and competently.

The best gift you can give yourself is knowing what you’re good at and being able to communicate it clearly. If you don’t talk positively about yourself and wave your own flag, who’s going to do it for you?

In this video, we explore why self-belief, confidence and positive self-communication are essential if you want to create future opportunities. You may be great at what you do — and others may tell you that — but you still need to stand up and demonstrate it yourself.

As part of future proofing yourself, this video shares simple but powerful reflection exercises to help you:
- Identify your strengths and positive qualities
- Recognise your achievements at work and outside of work
- Understand how others see you at your best
- Reconnect with hidden talents you may have forgotten
- Build confidence by focusing on what you enjoy and do well

You’ll be encouraged to write things down, focus only on the positives, and challenge negative self-talk when it appears. Confidence grows with practice, and so does competence in talking about yourself in a positive, authentic way.

If you want to build resilience, create new opportunities and feel more confident in how you present yourself, this video is a great place to start. Remember — the best gift you can give yourself is being positive about you.

How to Sell Yourself

You’ve done great things in the past. You’ve built experience, knowledge, and credibility. But is that enough to secure your next opportunity?

In this video, we explore a shift that many people find challenging, particularly when looking for a new job, a new role, or a fresh career direction. While your past achievements matter, decision-makers are far more interested in the value you can bring in the future.

We often talk about ourselves in terms of what we’ve done before. It feels safe. It feels factual. And it does help to establish credibility. But when opportunities are scarce or competition is high, simply listing past experience isn’t enough. Employers, clients, and stakeholders want to know how you will solve their problems going forward.

Using the idea that we are all a “limited company”, this video encourages you to think differently about how you present yourself. Your knowledge, skills, and experience are your products. Your time and expertise are what you sell. When it’s time to look for new opportunities, you need to think like a business and tap into your own marketing department.

A key focus of this video is the importance of due diligence. Before telling anyone how brilliant you are or how much value you’ll bring, do you really understand what they’re looking for? Do you know their needs, wants, and expectations? Whether it’s a new job, a promotion, a project, or a career change, asking the right questions is essential.

Instead of treating conversations as a sales pitch about your past, learn to frame them as a business proposal. Understand the brief first. Then clearly explain how you will bring teams together, overcome challenges, meet business goals, and create measurable value in the future.

This video is particularly useful if you:
- Are job hunting or considering a career change
- Are in your 40s, 50s, or 60s and feel stuck relying on past experience
- Want to improve interview performance
- Need to communicate your value more confidently
- Want to future-proof your career

Learning to sell yourself isn’t about arrogance. It’s about clarity. If you can’t clearly explain the value you bring, who will do it for you?

Understanding your personal values is one of the simplest yet most transformative exercises you can do for your life, your wellbeing, and your decision-making. In this video, we explore the question: What are your values? It’s a question many people don’t stop to consider, yet it sits at the very core of how we live, choose, and grow.

Your values shape your behaviour, guide your priorities, and influence how you respond under pressure. They’re not about following what society tells you is important — they’re about defining what you genuinely believe matters. Whether it’s family, calmness, ambition, kindness, achievement or fun, your values create the structure for a meaningful and fulfilling life.

In this video, you’re encouraged to reflect on a list of example values and to spend some time identifying your own. You might start with a broad list — something you can easily find online — and then narrow it down to your top three or four. This is much more manageable and far more effective when it comes to understanding who you are and how you want to live.

As you reflect on your own values over the coming days or weeks, you may find that certain words resonate deeply. You may notice areas of your life that align fully with your values — and others that don’t. This reflection isn’t about judgement; it’s about clarity. When you know your values, you can live more intentionally, make healthier choices, and create a life that genuinely feels like yours.
