Following on from my previous post, regarding my World Horse Welfare Hall Farm Clinic yesterday, a sample of some of the jumping sessions. The groups started smaller and went higher throughout the day. If anyone was there and has more photos please send to me 😍

A few of the varied combinations I had yesterday at my Clinic at World Horse Welfare Hall Farm . Starting with some Polework . We had a double half square, for bending and going over. A line of poles, raised poles and then in the first jump group just 3 poles , then placing pole to jump etc.

Sad news. I was lucky enough to observe him training and competing in my ' Chester' days up at Waverton Riding Centre. He gave my boss Bobby Banks, some lessons and some of the liveries . He competed at the big competitions there and locally. I learnt an awful lot from watching him and being judged by him. Latterly, whilst I was an Equine Lecturer at Easton College , he came and did an amazing training day, which was a privilege to observe.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Stephen Clarke FBHS.

Stephen was one of the most highly respected dressage judges in the world, with an extraordinary career spanning national and international competition, judging and education.

A Fellow of the British Horse Society, Stephen was awarded the Queen’s Award for Equestrianism in 2010 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the equestrian world.

His knowledge, generosity and kindness inspired so many across the sport, and his influence will continue to be felt through the judges, riders and officials he supported and mentored.

Our thoughts are with Stephen’s family, friends and all who knew him. His contribution to dressage and the wider equestrian community will never be forgotten.

This is Black Velvet, my first horse . I begged for years to get a pony but to no avail. I used to ride any ponies in the village that I could borrow. I fell off my bicycle getting there, more often than I did off the ponies.🤣
Dad, turned up with Velvet one day to my utter joy! ❤️
He could be very stubborn, but would follow Mum anywhere. Often Mum, would either walk or cycle in front if us until we got going.
I think our first show was at Old Buckenham, where we got a 3rd in the Best Turned Out, I treasured that rosette and was so proud.
He was well loved and lived to his late 20's. ❤❤❤

Had to share this after seeing it on Naomi Jaffa 's post .
Sounds like it was a great day .
I am not advocating that we all whip off our bridles and try this! But it is 'food for thought' and the future.
As a child / teenager I thought nothing of getting on ponies in the field, in a head collar and riding around ba****ck . It was just natural, I don't remember falling off, or losing control and the ponies moved around happily .
My parents probably didn't know , but may have been ok with it 🤣 that said it's not something I would advise 🤣🤣 for obvious health and safety reasons .. ( and also thinking of the pony or horse which should always come first).
If you are interested in going ' bridleless much research and training needs to take place first 🐴🥰

What I saw at the weekend gives me so much hope for the future of our sport.

The first British bridleless competition saw riders competing in both dressage and showjumping completely without a bridle. I urge you to seek out the footage of these tests and rounds, but more importantly, sit down and really watch what these horses and riders are doing.

This is what our sport should be about.

True connection that cannot be masked, forced or falsified with two reins, a bigger bit or the latest piece of “magic” equipment.

Horses afforded the freedom to move their head, neck, jaw, tongue…unrestricted, and still performing. Not just performing, but performing comfortably and happily.

Every single one of these riders deserves our respect. Whilst so much attention is given to those who can only achieve these things with metal, leather and restriction, these riders are achieving harmony through nothing but training, patience and understanding.

Does everyone need to ride bridleless to prove that? No, of course not. But the amount to be learned from watching these horses, and how they respond is significant.

There is so much negativity in the equestrian world, and it isn’t unfounded. There is a lot not to like, a lot to be angry about, and a lot that needs to change.

But this felt like a breath of fresh air.

A clear sign that there are riders out there who can and will do it differently, even if they don’t get the same spotlight as the more “conventional” combinations.

These are the riders we need to champion, these are the riders we need to celebrate, because sometimes it’s hard to believe that performance sport and prioritising welfare can coexist.

But here it is, living proof and my goodness, is it magical.
