The Lovers
I don't know if I have ever pulled this card, if I have it happens very infrequently, so much so that I had to look it up to understand it's significance in today's pull. (Yes it's ok to do that).
I struggle with this card because it's meaning is seemingly very straightforward and uses obviously biblical imagery. As we live in a society where one thing sells above all others it is easy to dismiss this card as irrelevant to anything other than a love or relationship reading.
I would ask you to consider this card as being titled The Choice instead of the Lovers as that is the heart of its message.
On examination of this familiar image we can see a triangular gaze; the man looks towards the woman, who looks towards the angel Raphael, who looks down upon the scene. Each is asking a question; the man is asking about the woman's passion; his masculine energy focussed on action, the woman is asking for divine guidance attempting to choose between temptation and desire, and the Angel Raphael asks both of them to question their relationship with each other and the Divine. It is a kind of pinball of rebounding indecision.
As a Major the Lovers follows the Hierophant; the Fool is now aware that doctrines exist, his next step is to question himself; how far he is willing to engage with enshrined rules? will he follow or will he go his own way?
As a 6 this card asks will you get back up again to continue on this journey? Is the goal worth the travail? How will the next step be different?
Archangel Raphael speaks to the healing power of the Divine, and represents caregivers, couples, and those experiencing emotional burnout and major life challenges.
In essence, this very static image with its triangular dilemma asks us are we staying or going? Only we can decide; if we are to move forward will we take the longer higher road of our highest and best? Or take the quick exit and give in to our need for instant gratification? To what extent are we considering our relationship with the divine in this choice? Have we taken time to pause and consider the consequences?
There is no judgement in this card (that comes later), there are only questions.
