Today is Boss's Day; a US-based celebration dating back to 1958.

Boss’s Day has been described by some as a “Hallmark holiday”; a bit commercial and potentially awkward due to workplace power dynamics. Others see it as a genuine opportunity to recognise good leadership and foster a positive team culture.

Needless to say we believe in the latter and suggest using it for the following:
- Acknowledge leadership and support
- Celebrate mentorship and professional development
- Strengthen workplace relationships
- Encourage gratitude and team cohesion

Today is World Standards Day and that the concept arose from a meeting 80 years ago during which delegates from 25 countries agreed to set up an international organisation focussed on standardisation? World Standards Day, though, didn't come to be until 1980, some 35 years later.

Today is Own Business Day and TBC is co-owned by our two senior directors. This has enabled us to take the decision (due to a number of personal circumstances this year) to close the business and retire at the end of 2026.

Today is Day and we want to remind you that bullying in any form in unacceptable.

Bullying isn't just physical, it can be mental or emotional too. What's more it isn't just aggressive behaviour. It also includes name-calling or deliberately calling someone by the wrong name, intentionally excluding someone, coercive control, and cyber bullying.

In the workplace it can often involve an observed or perceived power imbalance.
If you are a victim or you witness something you must report it. If it is your direct manager that is doing it, go above. But, regardless of who you report it to, tell a co-worker and always report it to HR.

At the start of the month we mentioned that October sees several month-long awarenesses/celebrations. Today we're looking at one that deserves attention; World Bullying Awareness Month.

Bullying in the workplace has been happening for as long as there have been workplaces. But that doesn't make it acceptable. Sadly, with online communication, cyber bullying has become yet another way for bullies to torture their victims.

No form of bullying is acceptable nor should it be tolerated. The best thing to do is to document what is happening, take screen shots where appropriate, record conversations, and report it all to HR. And, if you see or hear someone else being bullied, do the same; record as much as you can and report it to HR.

Today is Be Nice Day or Do Something Nice Day depending on which pages you look at. Our is to do just that; something nice. It could be as simple as doing the coffee run, covering for someone so they can leave early, or adding a treat to someone's order. Or, of course, you could top up the paper in the printer.
