Just ask.

If you want to know anything about your team… just ask.

Want to know how happy they are?
What parts of the job they love most?
What they’re struggling with right now?
Where they want their career to go?
What development they actually want?
What would make them stay?
What you could do better as a manager?
What they think of the benefits?
Whether they feel supported?
Why they seem down?
What skills they’ve got that you’re not using?
How you could make things better for your clients or customers?

Just ask.

I often sit in rooms with managers who are trying to work it all out and guessing how someone feels or what they want. They work together to come up with ideas to “fix” things. Or they ask me and of course I have lots of ideas 😉

But the best answers are right there, you just have to ask the question.

Team meetings, one-to-ones, water cooler moments, staff surveys, pulse surveys… there are loads of ways to do it. You just need to pick the right one and actually do it.

So this week, get a bit nosy.

You might be surprised what you find 😊

You know that performance conversation you have been putting off?

Yeah, don't do that.

Leaving it rarely makes it easier. Small issues settle into habits, and by the time you step in, it will feel way heavier than it needed to be.

Most people are not avoiding feedback because they do not care. It is usually the opposite. You want to get it right.

A few things that help:
- Say what the issue is and use a real example
- Be clear about what happened and when. Stick to what you saw rather than what you think it means
- Explain why it matters
- Link it to something real. Team workload, missed deadlines, customer impact. It helps the conversation land
- Be upfront about where things are.
- Absolutely NO threats, but also no dancing around it. If it could move into something more formal, say so calmly
- Keep it a conversation, ask for their view and listen. There is often more going on than you first see

These chats are rarely as bad as they feel in your head. Done early, they are usually quicker, clearer, and far more productive.

So say the thing...

May is National Walking Month.

You do not need a full wellness strategy or a big fancy pants launch plan to get people up and moving.

Here are some small things you can do.

Suggest a walking meeting instead of another call
Encourage people to actually take a proper lunch break
Make it feel normal to step away from the desk without explaining yourself

These things sound simple because they are. But when they become part of how work feels day to day, they have a massive impact.

If you are trying to improve wellbeing, start there. Not with a big initiative, but with what people experience on your average Wednesday.

They handed in their notice and I didn’t see it coming.

We hear that a lot. The thing is, it rarely comes out of nowhere.

Most people do not wake up and quit on a whim.

There is usually a slow build. They're a bit quieter in meetings. There's less input. A sense they have checked out before anyone has said it out loud.

By the time the resignation lands, they have often been weighing it up for weeks, if not months.

You do not need long, formal reviews to catch this earlier.

A simple, regular check-in can go a long way:
- What is going well right now?
- What is getting in the way?
- What would make things easier>

This kind of conversation keeps you close enough to spot when something shifts. It also gives people space to say things before they turn into decisions to walk.

Wahhooooooo two bank holidays in May.

Before you head off for the first long weekend, there's a quick question for you, do you know how bank holiday pay actually works in your contracts?

This is one of those areas where different wording creates very different outcomes. Some people are entitled to the day off. Some are expected to work with extra pay. Some get time off in lieu. Some get neither.

A few quick checks worth doing:

Do your contracts clearly state what happens on bank holidays?
Is it consistent across your team, or does it vary role to role?
If someone works a bank holiday, what do they get in return?
Would your team answer those questions the same way you would?

If the wording is vague, people will fill in the gaps themselves and that's when it goes belly up.

Bank holidays are predictable and so the confusion around them does not need to be.

Could you find four happier faces??

This is what sharing your challenges with your peers does for you. My motivation and energy levels are off the charts thanks to these wonderful humans (and the rest of the group that weren’t in this pic!).

We were all brought together by and the Help To Grow scheme who set up some peer group follow up sessions. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer group of people to spend the next few months with.

Lots of nuggets to take away, my favourite being “everyone needs a Sally” 😉

How many items could you get in a matchbox?

Of all the school challenges and activities that Bo has brought home, this Matchbox Challenge really got me, I took it way too seriously.

We had to list and number everything we squeezed in and it had to be able to open and close still. You could only have one of each item, no duplicates (ie different seeds), no body parts (🤢), no living (or dead) things, no perishable food.

So how many items do you think we got in??

This could be quite a fun team challenge! Or maybe it’s just me that’s likes this stuff 😂

Spring cleaning usually starts with desks, cupboards, or that inbox you’ve been ignoring since November.

People processes rarely make the list.

Yet they’re often where the daily friction sits.

Policies that no one has opened in years.
Processes that live in someone’s head.
Managers answering the same questions again and again because nothing is written down clearly.

Behind the scenes clarity makes day-to-day management far calmer.

• Check that policies still reflect how your business actually runs
• Remove anything no one uses
• Make key processes easy to find and easy to follow
• Update language so it sounds like you, not a legal textbook

If your HR cupboard feels a bit overstuffed, we can help you sort it properly.
